RAF Mildenhall Visitors Guide
Re: RAF Mildenhall Visitors Guide
Another very useful guide :- https://www.spotterguide.net/planespott ... -mhz-egun/
This season, I'll be mostly wearing........A THONG!
Re: RAF Mildenhall Visitors Guide
No disrespect to Johns Field or The Willows Campsite but I was reminded the other day of the fantastic spotters enclosure at the opposite end of the Runway. Just a shame they closed that after certain events in 2001.
Re: RAF Mildenhall Visitors Guide
Why was the viewing area closed in 2001, please?

Post 9/11 reference, although not sure it was ever stated as such as the reason for closure/removal.

Re: RAF Mildenhall Visitors Guide
It was closed after 9/11 when they built the new main gate and vehicle inspection point.
I used to spend quite a few hours there , it was probably the closest you could get to an aircraft without being at an airshow.
Its only problem was the sun at certain times of day. Ground shots weren’t too bad but anything in the air could be challenging.

Re: RAF Mildenhall Visitors Guide
It certainly was a great spot in the 80's and 90's when we first started visiting there, but I don't think ANY viewing location beats the field at the 22 end at Coltishall! I remember being there in the early 90's for an exercise, I suspect Mallet Blow or whatever it was called by then (Northern Banner?) as 3 x 31 sqn Tornados sat on the brakes on full power at the end of the runway and then engaged reheat. I have never felt the ground shake like that before or since!Philwinward wrote: ↑Fri May 07, 2021 8:15 amIt was closed after 9/11 when they built the new main gate and vehicle inspection point.

Re: RAF Mildenhall Visitors Guide
Hi All,
I will be transiting Mildenhall on the way to a much postponed holiday in Norfolk.
Apologies for the rookie questions but I am after best places to ‘read of. The C-22 and C-130s parked up.
Also, for the locals , I have dogs with me so any tips on local parks etc really appreciated.
I’m sorry for the. ‘Numpty’ questions .
Brgds

What are the opening times for John's field?
Re: RAF Mildenhall Visitors Guide
Thanks for the reply
Re: RAF Mildenhall Visitors Guide
Having visited John's Field last week, I was very impressed. I have been told that there is an establishment nearby called Mickey's Burgers which produces great take away food. Looking at Google maps it seems that the route from the field to the burger shop takes you onto a road within the base perimeter and around the end of the runway. Is that correct or would I have to drive back through the village to get to the north side of the runway and access the shop? Any advice would be most appreciated for future visits.
Re: RAF Mildenhall Visitors Guide
Good old Google maps. Took me into a field at Stansted the other day, when there was a quite satisfactory road available! Looks to me like Mickey is on base. There are two chip shops in Mildenhall (one served me undercooked chips and the other took half an hour) and a Sainsbury's. Looks like there's another chip shop last turning on the left before the Bird in Hand roundabout.

Re: RAF Mildenhall Visitors Guide
I've not been to The Hall since 2001. There used to be a footpath from somewhere near the Willows camping site to under the nee 11 runway and on past the water-towers to the north side. I think it was before 2001 the pathway was closed; also I think Mickey's is within the semi-restricted area of Beck Row; I was denied access to a table-top sale at the Bob Hope Centre before that year.
I'll leave it to the likes of Bollo and other locals to confirm.
