LN Runway Status 24/06 (or 25/06)

Post by Viper28 » Wed Jun 24, 2020 4:27 pm

Evening,
Does anyone have the definitive state of the LN runway at the moment. I keep seeing alternate posts on FB that it's got yet another hole in it and the Eagles are dirverting to Mildenhall again.
Thanks in advance
Simon

Good evening, just returned home after a morning visiit to LN viewing area. very busy with 18 aircraft noted flying. I dont know the definitive state of the runway but late morning there was a near diversion situation according to a local when a suspicious package was found. Some hot turns were cancelled but i dont think any diverted. All the aircraft i saw depart arrived back.

Regards

Brian

As mentioned elsewhere on here Lakenheath ops said a 23' hole has appeared. As you infer this is the second hole so if this is a systemic problem they could just close until after independence Day!

This in addition to the suspicious vehicle that happened in the morning!

Thanks all. I checked the NOTAMs also and saw nothing. I'll probably risk a trip tomorrow as it will be my last chance for a few months.
(Hope they got a good warrante on this runway surface!)

Crossing my fingers and heading down tomorrow as well. At least there's Mildenhall (and Marham if i'm feeling really lucky).

Just read this on Facebook post so it's 2nd hand info:

Great day at lakenheath even thi not much flying. Got blue special tail of the 493rd doon performance take off. Then a pilot took the 3rd cable and ripped it oit causing a 25x25ft hole in runway. This caused runway to be shut just before dinner. And last flight of mornimg to be diverted to mildenhall. And after dinner 8 went up and all except 1 diverted to milldenhall as pilots not happy landing back at lakenheath as runway damaged.

Does not sound promising

this NOTAM current......

U2929/20 - RWY 06/24 AVAILABLE FOR 48 FIGHTER WING LAUNCH AND RECOVERY
AIRCRAFT ONLY. 26 JUN 14:32 2020 UNTIL 03 JUL 16:00 2020. CREATED: 26 JUN 14:36
2020

But with Multiple F15 parked at Mildenhall, the 48th could fly from either base.

I would suggest your best bet is going to Mildenhall. They’ve transferred around 19 aircraft over there so that Lakenheath can resurface the runway near the cables.

I think you need to check out the Lakenheath section for today and that will give you the answer.

Sorry mate that was the wrong answer as there is not a daily thread for Lakenheath, but they are operating as normal now.

Cheers Martin.

24/06..... Roughly 2 miles long, tarmac and concrete with a few cables strung across it :P

Seriously though as far as I’m aware it’s back in normal use.... unless they blow another hole in it between now and Tuesday....
