Flying prevails whenever a man and his airplane are put to a test of maximum performance.

Re: Exercise Sabre Strike
US heavy bombers in Germany? Talk about unpopular!
Re: Exercise Sabre Strike
Fairford is the only USAF designated bomber 'Forward Operating Location' in Europe (ref 501st Combat Support Wing Factsheet). e.g. has appropriate hardstandings and other infrastructure etc. Hence its use during Iraq & Balkans campaigns.andrew b wrote:Would they not use germany instead of fairford should u.s might be used.

Re: Exercise Sabre Strike
You have to take it as a whole, hardstanding and infrastructure; i.e. weapons storage facilities, weapons loading facilities, the right type of fuelling and maintenance equipment, the correct security levels, etc.
Fairford is the base the USAF have allocated as their bomber FOB for Europe and it's the one that is kitted out for such aircraft to base from.

What happened to Moron in Spain?johnwayne wrote:Fairford is the only USAF designated bomber 'Forward Operating Location' in Europeandrew b wrote:Would they not use germany instead of fairford should u.s might be used.
Re: Exercise Sabre Strike
See Chris Globes comments above that accurately reflect the practical aspects of Fairfords unique European bomber FOL status.Thunder wrote:What happened to Moron in Spain?johnwayne wrote:Fairford is the only USAF designated bomber 'Forward Operating Location' in Europeandrew b wrote:Would they not use germany instead of fairford should u.s might be used.
This doesn't preclude other bases such as Moron being used as bomber FOL's 'in extremis' (e.g.) Iraq campaigns. Moron has a lot of other activity these days which occupies ramp space etc.
Re: Exercise Sabre Strike
Like the B-2A strike in Libya, coming all the way back to Fairford would have added many hours to an already long flight. Fresh crew was shipped to Moron and they recovered there before making the journey back.
Re: Exercise Sabre Strike
There is, of course, a difference between crew swapping and using somewhere as a base of operations...
Re: Exercise Sabre Strike
Did the B2 operate from Fairford when it hit Libya, I thought they came direct from Whiteman?
