Post by stealth1234 » Wed May 14, 2014 8:52 am

There is supposed to be a deployment of B-52's to FFD for this exercise however no word on when or how many.
The exercise will be taking place in the Baltic's this summer.

If anyone has anymore information I.e Dates, numbers i would be grateful. I do have a picture of the exercise patch but not sure how to upload pictures on here

Fairford is the only USAF designated bomber 'Forward Operating Location' in Europe (ref 501st Combat Support Wing Factsheet). e.g. has appropriate hardstandings and other infrastructure etc. Hence its use during Iraq & Balkans campaigns.

You have to take it as a whole, hardstanding and infrastructure; i.e. weapons storage facilities, weapons loading facilities, the right type of fuelling and maintenance equipment, the correct security levels, etc.

Fairford is the base the USAF have allocated as their bomber FOB for Europe and it's the one that is kitted out for such aircraft to base from.

See Chris Globes comments above that accurately reflect the practical aspects of Fairfords unique European bomber FOL status.

This doesn't preclude other bases such as Moron being used as bomber FOL's 'in extremis' (e.g.) Iraq campaigns. Moron has a lot of other activity these days which occupies ramp space etc.

Like the B-2A strike in Libya, coming all the way back to Fairford would have added many hours to an already long flight. Fresh crew was shipped to Moron and they recovered there before making the journey back.

There is, of course, a difference between crew swapping and using somewhere as a base of operations... :)

Did the B2 operate from Fairford when it hit Libya, I thought they came direct from Whiteman?
