Indeed bizfreeq I was thinking a similar thing. As it would seem a bit pointless to deploy when they can just do it from home.

The US military issue "promises"?
Chris,
I think you may find that wording is just down to the translation.

I have attended the last 5 Ample Strike exercises, and have also been emmbeded with the JTACS. Many of which are American normal JTACS, but there is also a large number of U.S. Special Force JTACS. In fact the Americans put a lot into this particular exercise, and try their hardest to get their own air assets involved to complement their own in-house training.

I should add that there has also been a spotters day each year, coinciding with the VIP/Media day. Enthusiasts are taken on base to the runway edge for the day. This year however there will not be a spotters day, as the location for the VIP/Media Day has been changed from the airbase to a very large training area.

If you follow that logic through then theres no point in having FOB's at all , which is clearly not the case . Getting assets nearer to theatre of ops allows greater sortie rates so more 'bangs for your bucks' on target , as well as offering a 'show of force' deterrance option .e.g. Current B2 deployment to Diego Garcia . So if you have FOB's , you need to exercise them regularly , just like GSM's are regularly practised . Whether this years Ample Strike bomber contribution is handled by GSM's or a deployment is I guess an open question [just like whether the RJ's eventually transfer to Fairford or not ! - sorry couldn't resist ;) ]

Now with the end of BTF 20-2 will there be anymore deployments? Rumours of a B1 deployment in 2 weeks apparently.

A brave move if they do come given Covid is on the increase again. Maybe just maybe the B-1s that went to Alaska were meant to be at Fairford right now, only just maybe of course.

Ah cool, I missed whatever confirmation you saw that it's not Covid keeping them away from Fairford then.
