Let's just check this thread doesn't accidentally cause a public relations disaster! (And yes, the base does get calls about incorrect things people 'have read on the internet')

We know there's a U-2 Forward Operating Location at Fairford and there are several Bomber Task Force deployments a year, both of which are contingency operations that contribute to the region's stability. We now know the more traditional RC-135 TDY capability at Mildenhall won't be moving to Fairford. There's been no further suggestion that Fairford's role will change by getting any other aircraft.

We also know there's a lot of construction work planned at Fairford over the next few years to support its role as a contingency base, although there's slightly less work planned now that the RC-135s won't be moving to Fairford. We can probably assume that the people involved in signing contracts knew more than we did about whether it was safe to commit to paying to build RC-135 facilities.
