Can a civilian freighter carry the same types of cargo as a military cargo aircraft?

Yes they can......both use standard pallets on which the cargo is placed. Obviously outsized items will normally be military only but maybe possible due to the front loading capability of 747's

Can they carry explosive objects though? Would be surprised if they could as I can't even get model paints on a plane

Re: June and July activity
It was a misleadingly rhetorical question to continue the conversation, my apologies. There's quite a bit of ground equipment for America's largest aircraft that can only be transported in a C-5 or C-17.

B-52 Flypast expected at RAF Valley 75th Anniversary families day on the 2nd June. This suggests a possible arrival date, if not before

Re: June and July activity
to answer the questions about the pallets, the Military and Civilian world use different pallets which have different sizes. It is a requirement of any US carrier flying for AMC to accommodate the military pallets and this means the locks on the aircraft have to be repositioned which is usually the responsibility of the Load master on the positioning flights. The Civil aircraft can carry anything the military can (so long as it fits on the aircraft) if they are operating for the military, although HAZ class 1.1 (mass explosive hazard) are not normally carried and on the occasions when they are its always with a Camber (CMB) call sign.
I hope that helps
