"Exercise POINT BLANK brought a successful close to the UK’s participation in this year’s series of United States Bomber Task Force deployments"
I hope not. It makes reference to an end to UK participation and not to the end of the deployment per se. Maybe I'm grasping at straws here as I was hoping to travel to Fairford next week.

Have heard a rumor that the B-1B return to Dyess tomorrow, Sunday (assuming they can kick-start 103!)

Next week's Atlas can't be landing at Pease for fuel. Whether its a B747 or a B767, direct Fairford-Dyess is well within the aircraft's range.

Are you taking about things that pop up on the wing?

I’m guessing you’re referring to the wing spoilers that deploy up once the a/c crew have committed to a full stop landing. They act as a kind of air brake along with the fully moveable rear stabiliser to help slow the a/c without over use of wheel braking.

Thank for the reply Thunder but the bits I'm on about are directly above engines on the top , they always drop down as it begins take off and pop up after slowing down on landing, I'm sure they must be to lock wings in place

Ah ok I think I see what your referring to now. It’s the fuselage wing shroud that moves up and down to allow the wing to be swept in and out. It appears to be in a raised state while on the ground probably to allow maintenance/inspection. When brakes are released on take off they close to reduce drag. Dare say someone else will explain it better.

Johnny, read this https://www.ravenware.com/factand/nofic ... sweep.html which explains quite a bit about the mechanics of the wings and control surfaces, the answer is partly there in the last paragraph. The B-1A had a different arrangement of the wing fairings when it was being developed for mach 2 where this area was critical to stability and clean airflows, not quite so important at the B-1B speeds but still an issue. What it does not say is why the default for this fairing is its fully swept position which may simply be to ease ground maintenance and inspection tasks.
