Highly likely to have been 083 yesterday, but that's not a visual confirmation.

Unless both frames carry the pod, it was 083. I have uploaded a 'reference pic' on the Fairford blog of its silhouette returning last night in the drizzle.

If Swanwick can't provide a service, how do they get back through controlled airspace then please?

Swanwick civil can provide a service if required as they do for a lot of military flights. Swanwick mil did provide a service in this case. Swanwick are short of fully qualified controllers. So it may have been an assistant controller watching the radio and and was waiting for a controller to come to the desk, which I have heard in the past. Monday they did seem a bit short. as I heard the same controller working several different frequencies.
