A400M Atlas new call signs??

Post by Skywatcher » Tue Nov 18, 2014 5:15 pm

hi All
Was just interested to find out if the new A400M would have any new call signs to go with it .
I know they use "Ascot" call signs all the time ,but I am interested to find out if they might have new ones e.g "Atlas 1 " or something like that :thumb:
P.s really cracking pictures on here of its arrival by the way

Why would they? RAF transport is Ascot. Its only an aeroplane, no need to start changing things around...

Cool fair enough ,was just wondering that's all, suppose it makes it more simple for them .
And as you said it is an transport aircraft so they should just stick to Ascot like always .
Look forward to seeing it myself as haven't seen it yet (apart from RIAT but that was/is just a test aircraft so doesn't count )
Thank you for the reply

I'm sure they'll use their standard squadron callsign too, as required.

Ascot came from Air Support Command Operational Transport and has been used ever since, the common alternative is Rafair, short for Royal Air Force Aircraft.
Ascot followed by 3 numbers is for internal flights, or followed by 4 numbers is for overseas. Number ranges are allocated to aircraft type.
Hope this helps.

I think Max means on local sorties like the C-130's, such as DOGFISH or ALBERT.

'I think Max means on local sorties like the C-130's, such as DOGFISH or ALBERT.'

These are tactical callsigns allocated to individual squadrons Max.

Note also that Ascot 3 number callsigns are allocated to the pilot but for the type.

Cheers
George

for the ASCOT callsigns (didnt know it related to "Air Support Command Operational Transport"), old school used to be:

1000 series HS 125 / Bae 146
2000 series VC-10 (now voyager)
3000 series Tristars
4000 series C130 mk 1 (now mk 4)
5000 series C130 mk 3 (now mk 5)
6000 series C-17
7000 series not used as far as i can recall
8000 series MOD charters
9000 series Tanker sorties for all types

I spotted a T tailed aircraft doing circuits around Brize from my office in Faringdon yesterday at around 14:00. Had a quick look on Plane Finder and it showed as an Ascot callsign, so I'm guessing it was an Atlas. I don't remember the assigned number though.

The A400 is using callsigns in the 400 range for training, would assume they will use the 4000 tange for operational flights as the Hercs haven't used this range foe well over a year.

George
Rafair is the voice callsign for RFR not RRR.
Rafair is used more for fast jets.
It is certainly not an alternative for Ascot.
