Rafair is the voice callsign for RFR not RRR. (My typo)
Rafair is used more for fast jets.
It is certainly not an alternative for Ascot.

Sorry Rob I should have been clearer, Rafair was commonly used by Vulcans, Nimrods and fast jets when travelling overseas.

I did not mean to imply that it was interchangable with ASCOT which was only used by transport aircraft as you said.

I meant that the other callsign often heard in use by RAF aircraft was Rafair.

Per the reservations filed with ICAO RAFAIR is the superset and then the others are the squadron, command or tasking reservations

I believe the callsign officially associated with VYT is "Anglesey", though I've never heard it used.

for the ASCOT callsigns (didnt know it related to "Air Support Command Operational Transport"), old school used to be:

1000 series HS 125 / Bae 146
2000 series VC-10 (now voyager)
3000 series Tristars
4000 series C130 mk 1 (now mk 4)
5000 series C130 mk 3 (now mk 5)
6000 series C-17
7000 series not used as far as i can recall
8000 series MOD charters
9000 series Tanker sorties for all types

The 7000 series, apart from a couple of Islanders, are normally allocated to aircraft going into Europe under a Rafair callsign
