Rafair is the voice callsign for RFR not RRR. (My typo)
Rafair is used more for fast jets.
It is certainly not an alternative for Ascot.

Sorry Rob I should have been clearer, Rafair was commonly used by Vulcans, Nimrods and fast jets when travelling overseas.

I did not mean to imply that it was interchangable with ASCOT which was only used by transport aircraft as you said.

I meant that the other callsign often heard in use by RAF aircraft was Rafair.

Per the reservations filed with ICAO RAFAIR is the superset and then the others are the squadron, command or tasking reservations

Code: Select all

ROYAL AIR FORCE, UNITED KINGDOM, RAFAIR, RFR

RAF-HQSTC (AIR TRANSPORT), UNITED KINGDOM, ASCOT, RRR
RED ARROWS DISPLAY SQUADRON, UNITED KINGDOM, RED ARROWS, SAK
RAF GLIDING SQUADRON (CONVENTIONAL), UNITED KINGDOM, SEDBURGH, GLS
RAF GLIDING SQUADRON (SLG), UNITED KINGDOM, PREFECT, VGL
RAF SCAMPTON, UNITED KINGDOM, SCAMPTON, SMZ
SHAWBURY FTU, UNITED KINGDOM, SHAWBURY, SYS
LOSSIEMOUTH FTU, UNITED KINGDOM, LOSSIE, LOS
84 SQN RAF AKROTIRI, UNITED KINGDOM, GRIFTER, AKG
UK ROYAL POSITIONING FLIGHTS (IN MILITARY AIRCRAFT), UNITED KINGDOM, KITTY, RRF
UK ROYAL/VIP FLIGHTS (IN MILITARY AIRCRAFT), UNITED KINGDOM, KITTYHAWK, KRF
32 (TR) SQUADRON RAF NORTHOLT, UNITED KINGDOM, NORTHOLT, NOH

From some long-ago memory, the 'T' in ASCOT is for 'Tasking' rather than 'Transport'

And then the quasi-civil ones

Code: Select all

AIRTANKER SERVICES LTD, UNITED KINGDOM, TOWLINE, TOW
UK ROYAL/HRH DUKE OF YORK, UNITED KINGDOM, LEOPARD, LPD
UK ROYAL/VIP HELICOPTER FLIGHTS,UNITED KINGDOM, RAINBOW, TQF
UK ROYAL/VIP FLIGHTS (IN CIVIL CHARTERED AIRCRAFT), UNITED KINGDOM, SPARROWHAWK, KRH

Interesting that TARTAN, VALLEY etc aren't reserved with ICAO so you shouldn't see those outside the UK FIRs.

And don't let this one catch you out on a flight-plan!

Code: Select all

FARNAS AVIATION SERVICES,SUDAN,FARNAS,RAF
Meanwhile these guys have an operating agency reservation but not a radio-telephony / flight-plan designator...

Code: Select all

FLYPAST,KEY PUBLISHING (HOLDINGS) LTD,UNITED KINGDOM,...

Pretty sure VYT, CWL, BKH, MRM, LOS, LEE, etc. are all reserved with ICAO.

I believe the callsign officially associated with VYT is "Anglesey", though I've never heard it used.

VYT was (or maybe still is) the callsign used by the Hawks based at Valley

YellowBelly wrote:for the ASCOT callsigns (didnt know it related to "Air Support Command Operational Transport"), old school used to be:

1000 series HS 125 / Bae 146
2000 series VC-10 (now voyager)
3000 series Tristars
4000 series C130 mk 1 (now mk 4)
5000 series C130 mk 3 (now mk 5)
6000 series C-17
7000 series not used as far as i can recall
8000 series MOD charters
9000 series Tanker sorties for all types
The 7000 series, apart from a couple of Islanders, are normally allocated to aircraft going into Europe under a Rafair callsign
