And who decided it was a good idea to put all the cargo and transport assets into a single airfield?

There's a discussion on PPRuNe around that question. q.v.

What surprises me is that Brize's runway was resurfaced 4 years after Mildenhall's - and both probably have had similar numbers of heavy movements since then (sts). Yet I don't see any runway problems at Mildenhall.

Perhaps they weren't re-surfaced with the same material? If they were, then the salt-laden East Anglian air may have made the difference!

Probably because the Mildenhall job would have come out of the US DOD budget. The fencing around Fairford compared to the wooden fence at the end of Brize is another example of money better spent!

Are you perhaps implying that the US do the job properly, whereas the RAF do it on the cheap? Unfortunately, I read report after report saying that the UK does have the money to do it properly but somehow it ends up buying from the lowest bidder - who's the lowest for a reason.

I'm not suggesting the RAF do anything on the cheap. Unfortunately it's those in Whitehall that make the decisions and it is the RAF that then have to live with the consequences of the tendering process.

With respect, nobody knows for sure the exact reasons for the runway surface deteriorating, or whether the resurfacing was done ‘on the cheap’.

Also, ‘Whitehall’ do not get involved in decisions like which contractor to award a contract to, and nor is it always awarded to the lowest bidder. The lowest bidder who meets all the technical and quality requirements yes, but those who don’t meet the brief are discarded.

Seems to be back up and running with normal operations underway - Akrotiri flight (ZZ335 according to Radarbox) currently on finals.
