REQ St.Mawgan/Newquay

Post by erik_k » Tue Apr 03, 2018 5:58 pm

Hi,

May 7th till 11th I will be on holiday close to this airport.
I am only mil interested, so will visit the museum for sure!
4 questions:
-Where can I see the 2 stored Tornados (ZA398, ZH553) from outside and can they be photographed?
- is the preserved Sea King visible from outside the fence?
- where is the FOST hangar with it's 2 AS365s visible. Can it been seen from close by?
- same for the Cobham helicopters (ex RAF Griffins/Squirrels)

Many thanks in advance,

Erik (from Holland)

Hi Erik, As no one local has responded to your request, I live 250 miles away from St Mawgan but can help a bit, The FOST hangar is next to the terminal, just drive into the car park. I saw XV372 by walking down a field beside the base. Hope this is of help.

The Tornados have not - as of last week - arrived at Newquay. Turn off the St. Columb to Newquay Road where signs say Aerohub. Continue past the former Nimrod hangar and park just beyond. The Cobham hangar is to the west beyond a tall wire fence. The Cornwall Aviation Museum is well worth a visit.
The preserved Sea King is at RNAS Culdrose sited behind a wire fence near a roundabout just beyond Sainsbury’s.
Enjoy your visit.

Thanks both forum your answers.
Can helicopters been viewed in the Cobham hangar from the fence?
Please inform me when the 2 Tornados arrive, as I both need them.

Believe both Tornados have been acquired by the Cornwall Aviation Heritage Centre, and will be going on display in the near future.

The Tornados aren't likely to arrive for a while yet, I've provisionally (and unofficially) heard June mentioned.

The JP and Canberra are in one of the HASs near the museum, haven't heard of them being visible other than when the doors are open.

HI Erik, I hope this will help, I also live about 230 miles from here,
Sea King XV372, I last saw this there april 2017, it was just a gutted shell and was dumped out on the eastern side of the camp, the next I heard of it was it going to Pembray Range in Wales not long after.
Also on the approach end of runway 30 is Spitfire corner, there is a lay-bye there, in the garden of the house is Spitfire Replica PL279 plus the nose section of Canberra WD954.
Cheers,
Rob

Just above text Newquay Aerohub on Google Maps I see the green Sea King on a grass field. Can this one been reached or is this off limits area?

Hi Erik that's the seaking that Rob mention's above, don't get to excited if you see F35'S on the dummy deck at Culdrose they are plastic.
