RAF Yearbook 2018

Post by Crusty » Sat Mar 31, 2018 7:22 pm

Just bought the 100th year special and quite frankly it's rubbish, when I look back at some past editions (ok I havnt bought one for 10 years) the lack of depth is appalling, I know it's attempting to cover a lot this year but still very dissapointing

TBH I find most uk produced aviation specials poor these days, there are lots of em quantity over quality just like the telly...rant over

Well if you worked in publishing you might realise how difficult it is to produce stuff these days.

Not quite as easy as you think.

To be fair these are not the original Yearbooks as we all remember which had not only interesting articles but features on display a/c and The RAF's Year (which were worth saving for future reference for details of Exercises, squadron disbandments, introduction of new a/c types etc). They are now produced to a standard format to be read and thrown away not kept and cherished as they used to be which is why the original ones are becoming increasingly collectible.

HORROR!!!!!! I sadly lost my entire RAF Yearbook Collection in my House Move Last Year! Fortunately I managed to keep hold of my RAF Annual Reviews and most of my Key Publishing Specials.

I maybe able to help you out if you're looking to replace them as I've duplicates of most of them going back to the '70s. I'm quite amenable to negotiating a fair price either for job lot or individual copies.

Must admit, having more than a passing interest in its history, I also viewed a copy of the special historical edition.
Got to agree with Crusty, it's thin on value.
I put it down, very disappointed, cash in pocket and walked away.

Anybody remember the old Airshow magazine that used to preview and list all of the years shows. That used to be a really good read.

Indeed I do. Still have a number of them going back to the late '80s. The best editions were those of the early '90s which contained reviews of all the seasons shows. Later editions were produced at the start of the season and as you say, were more of an airshow 'guide' containing articles on the display teams etc. Still good value but not as useful for reference purposes.
