No.1(F) Squadron’s ‘Friday Patch’
These patches are sometimes called morale patches and are usually a variation of the official patches, not always politically correct. This ‘Friday Patch’ shows the original design of the first No.1(F) Squadron’s badge embroidered over their current Typhoon aircraft. No.1(F) Squadron was commanded by the Late Brig Gen Robin Olds who went to England under the U.S. Air Force/Royal Air Force Exchange Program in 1948. Flying the Gloster Meteor jet fighter, he commanded No. 1 Squadron at Royal Air Force Station Tangmere between October 20, 1948 and September 25, 1949,the first foreigner to command an RAF unit in peacetime. This patch is a tribute to their former famous Commander who is well known for his quotes including this one –“Fighter pilot is an attitude. It is cockiness. It is aggressiveness. It is self-confidence. It is a streak of rebelliousness, and it is competitiveness. But there's something else - there's a spark. There's a desire to be good. To do well; in the eyes of your peers, and in your own mind.”― Robin Olds, Fighter Pilot: The Memoirs of Legendary Ace Robin Olds
