Morning chaps,
I've only ever taken photos of aircraft and I'm not going to lie, its getting a little tiring.
Tried out a mates Canon XF305 and wow, video is a whole different ball game and much more of a challenge in my opinion!
Considering switching over, what would people recommend as a 4k camera that has proven itself in aviation at a relative price point (by that i mean ideally under 1k)?
Thanks in advance!
P.S can i use my 150 - 500mm photo lens on a camcorder?
Did you know that registration to Fighter Control is completely free and brings you lots of added features? Find out more....
Equipment question
Re: Equipment question
I've been using Sony FDR-AX53 since 2016. It's quite good but not perfect. Shoots in 4K, HD and AVCHD and has built in gimbal assisted stabilisation that Sony call 'Balanced Optical Steady Shot (BOSS). The stabilisation in camera can be set at 3 different levels, but the top level isn't available when using 4K. I nearly always use 4K because the quality is noticeably better than HD. With fast moving and turning jets the gimbal lens can cause problems with sudden movements. It costs about £850 new (maybe a bit less). 1 battery lasts for about an hour and you would need 3 64 gigabyte SD cards to shoot a whole single day of RIAT. It's also light weight and has good zoom. Even with the in camera stabilisation I have to stabilise footage when editing, which can be time consuming. Here's an example which I've edited with Da Vinci Resolve (free version) and Apple iMovie - https://youtu.be/YyMnnHVr2dg

Re: Equipment question
I have a Panasonic GH6 which is truly an amazing bit of kit for both video and photography. Macro 4/3 isn't every ones cup of tea but for me it suits.... the GH5 is also a good contender for video and they both have the advantage of being a camera so you don't have to carry around seperate units. Check out the you tube reviews on both. The GH5 is a few hundred quid cheaper but still a great camera.
