South Korean - Black Eagles

Post by YellowBelly » Mon Mar 21, 2022 9:55 pm

Possible this is back on for this year after being cancelled last year :thumb:

"Some optimistic news for the 2021 Airshow season!

The world-famous South Korean aerobatic team the "Black Eagles" flying eight KAI T-50 Golden Eagle supersonic advanced trainers and light combat aircraft is considering a short European tour in July 2021! While not many details are known yet both the Royal International Air Tattoo and the MAKS-2021 International Aviation and Space Salon have already sent invitation letters to the Chief of Air Staff of the Republic of Korea Air Force and recently the General Director of Aviasalon JSC, Alexander Levin met with the ROKAF Attaché Colonel Kim Yong Wook to discuss the conditions for the participation of the team.

The Black Eagles are part of the 8th Fighter Wing of the Republic of Korea Air Force and are based at Wonju AB, in Gangwon province. Their last European visit in 2012 saw the team perform at the Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford in 2012 where they won the King Hussein Memorial Sword, for the " 'Best Overall Flying Demonstration' and the 'As The Crow Flies Trophy'. They also displayed at the RAF Waddington International Air Show where they were awarded the Boeing Trophy for the best display.

While we can't predict the future and how the COVID situation will look next year we can only hope with our fingers and toes crossed that the team will make it to at least one of those events!"

Schedule is out and mentions they may not be available in June-August due to 'International airshow' so it looks like they may well be doing a summer tour

Rumours that three C-130s have left S.Korea recently heading this way. Facebook post the other day showed the jets being dismantled in Korea.

Anyone have any knowledge of where they will be rebuilt or where they will operate from when here?

Someone has hinted that Waddo may play some part - no idea on the credibility.

What happened last time they were over in 2012?

The T-50's were flown into Manchester onboard 3 Korean AL 747's in 2012, they were then transported by road to Leeming for assembly.

I don't think they would all fit inside three C-130's!
This season, I'll be mostly wearing........A THONG!

Sorry Mike - yes you're quite right, I forgot to mention the 747s for the jets themselves.

Presumably for the Korean AF display team? Anyone know where they will be assembled this year? I remember it was Leeming 10 years ago.
Last time they were flown into Manchester on Korean Airlines 747 freighters then roaded to Leeming. I think it will be 777 freighters this time (to where?). The C-130s are for the support kit.

It won't be 777 freighters - a T-50 minus its wings won't fit through a standard freight door designed for palletised loads in the side of a 777F. Instead they will need something with a fully opening nose as the 747 freighter has. So presumably it will be 747Fs as last time, or perhaps An124s.

With 11 747 pure freighters I can't see Korean Air being unable to do this themselves.

Black Eagles

Post by NotoriousBadger » Mon Jun 06, 2022 11:19 am

I've heard chatter that the Black Eagles are due into MOD Boscombe Down Soon as a base for the Southport Airshow. I Believe they will be Flown in by some charter aircraft, as I don't believe the ROKAF have sufficient sized transport aircraft to transport them?
Sorry, Goose, but it's time to buzz the tower

This reminds me of when the jasdf Blue Impulse visited the usa in 1997 for the golden air tattoo at nellis. If i remember they were shipped over by sea and assembled .
flew at Nellis for the two day show and then went home. I was there for the show and have to say they were very good ,i still have the team leaflet given out by the Japanese air force ladies white glove and all. I think its the only overseas display they have ever done.

When they came over to Waddington in 2012(?), the T-50s arrived into Manchester by Korean B747F and were then roaded out to be rebuilt. The only Korean Air aircraft they will fit in is the B747F (they need the opening nose, the B777F side cargo door will not accommodate a T-50), so once we see Korean Air B747Fs headed for the UK we know it is game on. As to where the B747s end up, I don't have a clue!
