Can't understand how Clacton can do it financially but Lowestoft and Gt Yarmouth can't. However, the worst thing is that neither of them talked to the Clacton team to get best practice. Do different does not always work.

That's not really true. Both shows (Clacton and Yarmouth) had a lot in common, not least the same Flying Display Director!

Yarmouth faced a number of challenges from its local Safety Advisory Group (SAG) and also the local RSPB that in turn cost an awful lot of money. The local SAG placed a lot of demands on the Event Organisers (GY Tourism and Business Improvement Area) regarding traffic management and security (which is the reason the event was postponed in 2017) which in reality was way more than required and certainly not consistent with what is required of other seaside events. The pressure from the RSPB meant the Event Organisers had to commission a much more detailed ecological study which in-turn led to a very late re-write of the CAA Air Display permission.

Clacton has the advantage of already having the show in place so there's plenty of experience with the SAG and the Local Policing. Also, there's not the same interference from other organisations that Yarmouth faced. Clacton themselves nearly fell off the calendar a few years ago but fortunately the local council had the will and means to turn the event around into something that was more sustainable for now. Cuts to council funding will continue to bite for many years.

It is a shame that the GY Air Show has faced so many difficulties. It is a town that needs visitors and investment and certainly the GY Tourism and Business Improvement Area saw the airshow as a prime means of delivering that.

The inconsistency between different local SAGs and Police forces is an issue for air displays. It is something the British Air Display Association and the events themselves are trying to help resolve. The National Police Chiefs Council are also trying standardise the approach of various police forces to events with a dedicated airshows team.
