When they were due to leave this morning it was very bad indeed with heavy rain and thunderstorms. Whether they could have got up and flown above it I'm not qualified to answer though.The Phantom wrote:Was the weather that bad at Bournemouth that a Hawk jet cannot fly?

Dawlish Air Show 2011

Re: Dawlish Air Show 2011
The Reds were late arriving in Cornwall, so could not of made their display slot nor done a later one without it having a knock on effect and affecting their evening slot. There could of also the fact that Red 10 may not of been able to get to Dawlish, prior to the Reds if the Wx at Bournemouth stopped the helicopter departing. The weather check etc carried out by Red 10 is essential prior to any display.
This is based on my past knowledge and may be incorrect for this situation.
Regarding the rain/cloud cover - Yes a hawk could fly through it to get airborne, however it is a lot harder if for any reason they have suddenly turn around and divert back to Bournemouth. Also there is the factor that they would not be a singleton in thick/low cloud, and would be close formation with either another 8 or 3/4.

The weather at Bournemouth this morning was horrendous and as said, lightning in the area. So maybe you were disappointed but what would you rather have, a Red being struck by lightning (or the whole formation) or stay on the ground? By the afternoon the "former tropical storm" - (as it was in the Atlantic last week) was clear of Bournemouth and so they could take off .

So i take it all flying was grounded then; There were no civil airliners going out. Or maybe as mentioned, it was because they couldn't get their helicoptor launched.RichC wrote:The weather at Bournemouth this morning was horrendous and as said, lightning in the area. And yes, i was disappointed - but i get other chances to see them. I felt more sorry for all the parents and children who were there and get one chance. Also feel sorry for the organisors, after all the hard work they put in. But there's nothing you can do about the British weather!

It's bound to be disappointment for Kev Wills, that is obvious but you only have to look here http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... -MINS.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
to see what Bournemouth was like yesterday. Nothing flew at the Bournemouth Air Festival either!!!

I appreciate the Wx was bad at Bournemouth. My questioning was because the rumours/info on the hill were that the A/C were stuck in Bournemouth which was incorrect. I guess the Reds couldn't transit from BOH and go straight into a display. I'm sure Red 10 got airborne as well as they had a transponder problem but by the time they got to Dawlish it would be too late as it would mean spectators waiting for a few hous with nothing happening. A tough call for organisers to make.
