Potential new venues for cancelled Waddington Airshow?

Post by airfixpilot » Thu Nov 05, 2015 10:50 am

Don't laugh. We all know that Cleethorpes has now a airshow,be it limited. My thought is that it could be brought up to other seaside airshows standards. With diversion to Humberside, this could make it a great venue. It would however need to improve its trade stands and improve Raf and aviation stalls. With good. Rail and road links to Cleethorpes, this maybe the new waddington.

What's your views on this two day events.

How could any seaside airshow be the new Waddington? As a seasoned Bournemouth airshow goer,I love it, it is rated one of the best seaside shows year in,year out...but it is no Waddington and nor should it be. Seaside shows are a whole different kind of show, and any replacement for Waddinton will have to be on a large airfield setting to even start with.
Cheers

Cleethorpes doesn't have an airshow anymore. The local paper reported that the organising comittee had said it was too expensive to run, and as the council wasn't putting in any money this years wasnot going ahead, and they wouldn't be considering any future shows either.

Time will tell if that changes as the previous two years were well attended and were good financialy for the local businesses.

The council did organise a small flying event for Armed Forces Day and next June Cleethorpes will be hosting the National Armed Forces Day, This will from part of 8 days of events with ships, tanks and helicopters being lined up to take part - and hopefully some fixed wing participation as well.

That is besides the point. Waddington has a static display. If you look at the logs of Waddington airshows over the years, the static display often considerably out numbers the flying display participants. If there is a chance of a different base hosting the event rather than a seaside venue, then presumably there would be no need to ditch the static display. If you don't care about the static aircraft then fine, but for many others I suspect the absence would significantly detract.

Cleethorpes as a new venue for "waddinto" ?

A non-starter and just plain bonkers. RAF Waddington was the one and only for many and various reasons as regards the home of showcasing the RAF to all and sundry. Hopefully a new venue will be found which is centrally located somewhere in England and which caters for both static display and entertaining flight display - but Waddington was Waddington and the memories for the uncountable thousands that attended that annual extravaganza will remain.

Have faith, I'm sure the powers that be are working on a Plan B. They are not blind to the sentiments of this loss.

Finningley would be nice but it would disrupt their busy 5 flights a day schedule.

Its easy

Cleethorpes Airshow will not return end of although lots of people attended the show not enough people put money in the buckets, also although all the local businesses did very well out of the weekend when approached for a donations towards staging the show the following year very few were prepared to put there hands in there pockets, of course they then all cried foul when it was cancelled for good. To many local people wanted something for nothing I am afraid!

Steveo: this is EXACTLY why the Lowestoft airshow is no more :@ :@ :@

Too many 'tightwads' who would not put even a quid, let alone a fiver, into the bucket for what they were seeing :(

Complete 'Jodrell Bankers', IMHO, and they were the first to moan about its demise :Wow:

From memory at the last show, the 'official' stats quotes 300,000 visitors attending the event over the two days. The suggested donation was £3 per person - hardly a bank breaking amount and exceptionally reasonable given the display lineup - yet only approx £45k was collected. There was no way of avoiding the collection buckets but of course it wasn't mandatory to donate and many were seen to put notes in. I think many of these free seaside shows will find it hard to continue without significant financial backing from a sponsor
