Graham I'm not sure if your aware of this, (feel like I'm stating the obvious? !) But the above merlins are RAF mk3's and are fitted with the rear ramp for rapid deployment of troops/equipment just like the Chinook is.
How ever imminently these will be transferred to the Navy to replace the commando mk4 Seaking that are being fazed out next year.
All the mk3 merlins are currently based at RAF Odiham
But are maintained at Culdrose along with the navy one's. ;) and that's why you often see them down here.
Hope this information has been helpful ;)

Wally....It was me that replied, not malf buddy. :halo:
There's at least 1 (but normally more than that )Mk3 merlin at Culdrose at anyone time. !! There serviced in the hangar thats behind them in the first photo above..
When listing on your scanner next time listen out for a callsign of "Mike test 1" this will be a merlin out on air test from depth. And 9 times out of 10 it's an RAF Mk3 !!
Also listen for a "Vortex" callsign. Again this tends to be a RAF merlin from Benson routing down to swap over with a freshly serviced machine :D
Guess you missed the Algerian merlins flying around a couple of years back now then Graham
