Bit disappointed that they've banned telephoto lenses from the Swordfish enclosure for 2019 - didn't really see it as a big issue this year, although there were a few in there that had to be dealt with by stewards. Looks like they've decided to lump all the photographers in together and let them get on with it.

That's a big disappointment to me. I have been there for the last two years after going to the show for over 30 years. The whole Swordfish experience I felt was very good. Last year I did see one man constantly going forward to the front to take photos but that's surely not a reason to ban them from everybody. I took my tripod and had it set up at the rear of the enclosure, when I wanted to take photos I simply walked to the back of the tables and used my camera there out of everyone's way. Maybe a simple couple of rules could have stopped this ban upsetting the majority of camera users who were considerate to people around them. Guess its back to the queuing outside again. How very sad.

Hi Vlad,
Not quite sure what to do now. I was going to book into the Lynx enclosure on 1st November as it will be the only realistic enclosure that will allow cameras in, thus it will be sold out very soon after tickets go on sale. Or do I wait and see if Swordfish does a U turn. :S

The ticket page is now saying telephoto lenses up to 20cm will be allowed in Swordfish.

"200mm Telephoto"...Whizz you! That's a 'wide-angle' in terms of todays Air-show /Crowd distances. Still looking on the bright side, if the sun shines you can fit more of it straight down your pathetic optical shortcoming! :grr:

When saying "20cm" rather than the usual 200mm used in photography circles, I wonder if they mean lenses that are physically 20cm long, rather than having a focal length of 20cm. Due to the optics, lenses can be physically shorter than their focal lengths, so 300mm or 400mm may be fine, depending on the lens model. The fact that zoom lenses usually have a range of physical lengths also complicates things.

I certainly assumed they mean physical length rather than focal length. I can't imagine (well, I can) the squabbles there will be trying to enforce that on entry (especially if people haven't noticed the warning).

The whole thing is sounding less and less attractive.

This has existed in the US for ages, especially in enclosures. I can fully understand why they do it too.

Booked for Lynx as well. I shall be using my long lens to take photos of the people in Swordfish to make sure they didn't sneak any long lenses in :D

And so it begins

UK FLYING DISPLAY DEBUT FOR LITHUANIAN AIR FORCE!

Christmas has come early at the Royal Navy International Air Day HQ: we're celebrating news of our first confirmed participants! The Lithuanian Air Force will make its UK flying display debut with an L-39C Albatros jet trainer at Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton on Saturday 13 July. The Eastern European Air Arm is also reprising its 2018 static display contribution with examples of the C-27J Spartan tactical transport aircraft and Mi-8UTV Hip troop transport/search and rescue helicopter - winner of Air Day 2018 Best Rotary Wing Static Display!

These very rare contributions get Air Day 2019’s participation announcements off to the very best of starts and we are sincerely grateful for the support shown by the Lithuanian Air Force.

Early bird tickets with no booking fees are now on sale for a limited period only. Book your tickets here http://bit.ly/RNIAD19Home.

The Royal Jordanian Falcons have been confirmed for Air Day. I know not to everybody liking, but I think they put on a cracking display, and I for one are pleased to see them back.
