RIAT 2014 Awards:

Post by Steven » Mon Jul 14, 2014 4:36 pm

Couldn't see this posted anywhere else!

http://www.airtattoo.com/news/2014/jul/ ... at-honours

The King Hussein Memorial Sword (Best Overall Flying Demonstration): Army Air Corps - Lynx AH.7

The Paul Bowen Trophy (Best Solo Jet Demonstration): Royal Air Force - Typhoon FGR4

The Sir Douglas Bader Trophy (Best Individual Flying Display): Belgian Air Component - F-16AM Fighting Falcon.

The Lockheed Martin Cannestra Trophy (Best Flying Demonstration by an Overseas Participant): Italian Air Force - Frecce Tricolori

The Steedman Display Sword (Best Flying Demonstration by a UK Participant): Royal Air Force - Red Arrows

The 'As The Crow Flies' Trophy (FRIAT Trophy): Polish Air Force - Su-22 Demo Team

Best Paint Scheme Award: Hellenic Air Force - A-7 Corsair

What do you all think? Personally I felt the Solo Turk had a better display than his Belgian colleague. For me the best individual flying display is between the Austrian J-105, The SoloTurk and the Italian F-2000.

Steven.

The Italian Typhoon was definately better than the RAF one, Ive seen the RAF one 3 times now this year and it isn't a patch on last years display.

The Belgian F-16 display was excellent, then again so was the Dutch and Turkish, not much too choose between the three.

The Chinook should have won an award, im not a chopper person really but I watched that in awe.

Special mention for the Suisse Hornet, better than its big brothers display, the Gripen was excellent again and the AMX was fantastically flown.

I'd have personally just given the Su-22's all the awards though for those missed approaches :D

Seriously think they've had too much sun and vino at DBH after these awards!

ITAF Eurofighter was superb compared to RAF version, Soloturk was excellent, thought the AMX was excellent too and the ITAF Tornado busting the crowd on Sunday was brilliant!

Very difficult to judge I'd say. For me what swings it in favour of the Belgian F-16 was his demo on Sunday in very low vis and a torrential storm. I was expecting him to abort half way through but it was flawless, he really earned his award on Sunday morning. Not that the Dutch F-16 and Swiss Hornet were not good in poor weather Sunday, just that the Belgian display edged it for me.

As for Noel Rees and the Typhoon then I'm not sure why he gets stick, I've also seen it a few times and think its a very well executed display. Each to their own of course.

torrential storm? :S Surely you mean light rain shower? I was walking the static when it happened and stood briefly under the empty 494th merchandised stall for all of 2 mins

For the 'As The Crow Flies' I personally vote for the Apache but can see why my fellow FRIATers voted for the the SU-22s, I thought the SU-22s were better on Sunday in the low cloud conditions rather than Friday or Saturday.

The Italian F-2000 display was great but found it a little to distant and high at times

As Dunk said the Tornado pass virtually over the top of the FRIAT stand was epic

Italian Typhoon display was leagues ahead of anything else IMO, his display was artfully flown on all 3 occasions I saw it - it was night and day compared to the lacklustre Italian Typhoon display last year. A400M was spectacular. The Swiss Hornet was great too. Solo Turk looked slightly unhinged but I enjoyed it for that. RNLAF Viper was great, and really nice to see the aircraft back in its operational colours. The RAF Typhoon was good but I preferred Jamie's display last year.

Worst fast jet display for me was the Super Hornet. Can't believe they managed to make it look inferior to the legacy Hornet. It seemed to display about twice as far away and twice as high as all the other fast jets.

It's been stated elsewhere on another site that the display at Fairford was flown using Farnborough minima hence why it appeared so high and distant.

Belgian F16 was great, just pipped the Gripen for me, the Su22's were superb, and I make it a draw on the Typhoon, both excellent displays ably showing different aspects of the same aircraft types performance. A400 wasn't bad, just a pity it was about the biggest thing not only in the air but on the ground as well.

Thought the Chinook was good, but what happened to the Lynx on Saturday?

Italian Typhoon > Raf Typhoon
Frecce Tricolori > Red Arrows

And I've never seen a Tornado move like the Italian one did one Saturday. Was very suprised! Impressed with the Italians.

Not quite 'awards' but thinking of last years highlights.

I think It was a Norwegian C130 Medivac on the static. Fantastic to get on board. The crew were ever so friendly and approachable. As a nurse I was particularly interested in this item (plus it's a Herc!' What's not to like?)

Hurricane UP-S: Looked like It had just came out f the factory. How aviation has progressed? 40 years after the Hurricane, F16 and that s still a capable aircraft. I took a photo of one with a tiger soft toy in the cockpit. It did make me smile.

Su 22 were superb. Probably the rarity elevating the performance for me.

I had a fantastic day last year and my tickets are already in the car for this one :D
