Which sources and twitter page do you use if you don't mind me asking? Just want to get to the right place 1st time and not fight around traffic to change itsneezy24 wrote: ↑Thu Jul 05, 2018 1:32 pmThanks for this!
As always, I'll check Twitter and ATIS on the way (coffee at Membury), and probably choose East.
I went to West for departures last year and with hindsight (a wonderful thing!) wish I had gone East as they used 27! (and it was a NNE/NE/ENE wind - can't remember the speed).
Twitter did say 09, but it was on 27 when I got there, a stop just before Marston Meysey could be in order.

"ATC do their best to stay on RW27 as the preferential runway in use, up to a ten knot tailwind component. This has nothing to do with noise abatement, but there are several other factors that are taken into account:
1: RW 27 is operationally the much easier end to use for the approach guys at Brize.
2: RW 27 is operationally the much easier end to use for the set up of the airfield and, in general, positioning aircraft into the static.
3: On display days, RW 27 is the most efficient end to use for display aircraft, as there is less back tracking - which eats into the schedule.
4: Not an operational requirement, but we do appreciate that P&V East is the most popular, so all things being equal, we do our best to use RW 27.
However, there are several reasons as to why RW 09 has to take priority, even when the wind is below the 10kt tailwind:
1: We try to match the RW in use at Brize. Operationally, it is far easier for both airfields to be on Easterlies or Westerlies. As Brize has the aircraft more likely to be unable to take as much as a 10kt tailwind for arrival or departure, sometimes we will use RW09 at Fairford, because they need to use RW08 up the road.
2: If a few inbounds to Fairford start to request the into wind runway, we will change. It is not good operational practice to start trying to "play both ends against the middle", as we say.
I guess the main thing from the P&V point of view is that you get some notice of an impending change (in order to reposition yourselves if required), and we do look ahead at this. Pre shift, a discussion with the MET observers will identify when during the day the wind might increase to a speed at which a runway change is likely and we will factor that in to our planning. However, if a couple heavies rock up and ask for RW 09, then we need to change quickly - that's just a fact of airport life.
Looking ahead at the forecast for next week on the BBC, it's a difficult call. The forecast winds suggest in could be marginal for staying on RW27 into the afternoon on Wednesday and Thursday, but it's still a week away.
One final thing - we do our absolute best to get aircraft down to the West End loop for P&V West (especially the tasty items), but it is not always possible due to operational, traffic or language (yes those SU27s!) issues. However, if we are on RW 09, you should only expect landing shots down there, unless the parking layout requires an aircraft back down the western end."

Any news if the b52 and b1 are definitely due in today? If so around what time?

I believe that airframe went back to the states either Sunday or the day after...Just going by the chat we had with the crew on the Saturday that the airframe won't be going (I stand to be corrected!!)
