On Monday they start packing up the stuff at Lyneham for the move, so it wont be long until there's some sort of official confirmation as to where they're going.

Why are they always so secretive about everything??

They're always pleading for public support; public money; public donations; public help...
and in return they won't tell anything about what is happening!!
When Vulcan flew into Lyneham, i read about it on FC. When i looked at the 558 site a few days later, on their forum they were still making guesses as to where the Vulcan had gone! Then a few days later, Lord Pleming said that he could now announce that 558 had gone to Lyneham - something the rest of us knew days before!!

It's been on the cards before, but bizarrely Peel would not allow it to land.

Let's hope for better luck this time.

Not for me to be forum police but this should probably be in the dedicated Vulcan thread.

Anyway, there must be an official announcement soon from VttS confirming their destination I'd have thought.

To be fair they seem more open nowadays, there's weekly updates from them so I doubt they'll keep it a secret unless the airport themselves have asked for it to be kept quiet.

We'll find out soon anyway. :D

What do we need to save the last flying Vulcan?

During the first week in April, less than two weeks away, we will decide if XH558 can continue to fly, owned by a charity for the British people. What do we need to raise each month to survive?
£75,000 by the end of March
£125,000 by the end of April
£150,000 by the end of May
£350,000 in total

So far, we have received just £37,145, leaving us the challenging task of raising £37,855 in the last week of March.

Airshow appearance fees cover most flying costs but rarely leave any contribution towards her winter maintenance, hangarage, insurance and other overheads, particularly this year as public spending cuts mean that funding for RAF, RN and municipal airshow events has dropped dramatically.
Last year, however, we began to generate significant revenues from the Vulcan Village (our merchandise store) at shows. This year, thanks to the hard work of volunteers, many from the Club, we will have a full-season of income from this profitable activity.

We also have a range of new commercial activities that will start to make significant contributions early in the summer, including cufflinks and a luxury watch both made with Vulcan airframe materials, a superb print of the XH558 at Goodwood available with a crested display panel signed by Squadron Leader Martin Withers DFC and of course the auction of many more original Vulcan components including instruments, turbine blades and some fascinating technical curiosities.

Data reveals stark truth

How much have we raised towards the £350,000 needed to take off for the 2011 season? The runway graphic has returned to the website and shows how far short of the target we are. Currently, a little more than £37,000 has been raised, most of which has come from a very small number of very generous supporters to whom we are immensely grateful. Thank you.

Substantially less than one percent of the signed-up supporters who received the postal mailing have signed a standing order – just 300. Slightly more than 500 have donated, with an average donation of just £10. Again, this is significantly less than one percent – one in one hundred – of people receiving the mailer or the eNewsletter. But that fraction is assuming that all donations are from people who are signed-up supporters, where as many donations come from people who read about the appeal in the media. This means that a fraction of one percent of her supporters, people who say they support XH558 and want to see her fly, have actually helped to make this possible through the Spring 2011 flying season appeal.

Our most heartfelt thanks go to those 800 people who have donated and to those who already have a standing order or have made a recent donation or purchased merchandise prior to the spring campaign. We hope that these figures will help you understand why despite your personal generosity, we must not allow others within the supporter group to forget how costly it is to operate a Vulcan.

So is it going to Doncaster? and what day does it go?
Public money pays for the Vulcan - so why can't they tell the public these details instead of always being so secretive (maybe by the way this has put a lot of people off in the past from giving any more donations).

If it does go into DSA, it would be beneficial to let people know. You could sell tickets and organise some parking (there's plenty of room on base) for enthusiasts on the day at a fiver a pop and you would probably shift them all.

Win-win for the Vulcan and the Peel group (DSA).

I have no wish to upset anyone and have enjoyed seeing the Vulcan fly in recent years as much as anyone, I was at Waddington and saw it do its validation flight for the CAA and marvelled that the mighty Vulcan was once again back where she ought to be. But all things come at a cost. Perhaps this is not the forum to be gently enquiring what £350,000 might buy in terms of keeping a number of warbirds airworthy.

What might the average cost be say of keeping a Percival Provost flying, or an Auster ? Or say a Vampire or being a little more adventurous, what about a Spitfire ? It's lovely to see the Vulcan fly but it comes at one heck of a cost and, as has been reported on here so many times, the fundraising side of XH558 does seem to sometimes seem to leave something to be desired .

I suppose what I would really like to see would be a levy of say one pound per person from each air show she attends. This could surely be incorporated in to the admission fee.
