I don't think there's any question of "pushing" the aircraft. The aim is to keep the display as stress-free as possible whilst still being visually entertaining. I suppose it's basically a question of how each pilot interprets these aims. One person's concept of an interesting display is inevitably different to someone else's.

The days when Vulcan display flying was physically demanding are long gone but even back in those days, it was never a struggle. Compared to (for example) the mighty Shackleton which required a strong grip and biceps, the Vulcan was always a much more gentle affair, although it did need two hands on the stick at the top of those wing-overs when the aircraft often dropped considerably below the specified minimum speed!

Is it physically demanding to fly the display then? I can't really think of another reason why they should be different.

No mate,
its not physically demanding one bit, but at 65 Martin has seen it, done it and worn the T-shirt when it comes to Vulcans and was well known for his laid back approach when flying them for the RAF, but at 65, like most people of that age, they mellow and dont go so fast and slow down. Kev on the other hand is well up for the flight and when i speak to him gets excited about the thought flying her and pushing her.

John
It's much more mentally demanding than physical tho there is a certain amount of physical ability needed.

POD and Martin flew at Wittering yesterday - never thought to ask them who was flying today - but I believe t/o is around 3-3.30pm

Hi all,

Just wondering, does Al Mcdicken still fly 558? I remember he was a pilot during the test flight stages of 558's return to flight but I have'nt heard anything of him since. Is he still with the team?

Cheers,

No Al left a couple of years ago and I believe he doesn't fly at all now.
