Not 100% sure thou if my memory is correct, one engine was lost due to (F.O.D) in the early stages of her 1st flights at Brunti.
another was lost for metal particles found in one of the sump magnets and was pulled, not sure if Rolls Royce ever gave this the OK again.

Plus the 2 lost last week.makes just 4.

the (F.O.D) damaged one could have been one of her 4 old engines from her old display and fast taxi days.
I have a picture of one that's damaged somewhere.

So if the metal particles one was given the OK by Rolls and the (F.O.D) damaged one was not one of her 1 of 8 zero engines she could have 6 left,or if not only 4?

Just found this pic from inside the engine stores at the Hinckley warehouse, this was before the metal particles in the sump plug, so strike one off.

strike 2 off from last week leaves 1 spare, Maybe 2 if the metal particle engine was given the OK from Rolls Royce,It may have gone to Ansty down the road from me and given the ok.?

the other damaged engine was outside the zero engine bay, so this must have been from her older flying- fast taxi days.

Yesterday I was listening to an interview with Robert Pleming on display frequency radio and he said that of the two taken out, one of them was likely to be serviceable shortly. He said that they were still working with RR and another engineering firm to sort out the metal particle one.
Hope this clears it up

Can I ask why the engines on 558 seem to have such short/restricted life ? I understand that even the 'brand new' ones were given a very restricted lifetime/number of cycles. Does the same apply to types like the VC10, god only knows how old those must be ! I'm not suggesting damaged engines should be used though. Thanks

When you think of the money that gets thrown around at a whim for other projects, the Vulcan shouldn't really still need to be asking for last minute donations.

The engines are the last of a kind and are not supported by the OEM,
in service engines will be fully supported and still under OEM and the RAF. the service contract ended 30 years ago for vulcan engines.

I might be mixing something up, but I seem to remember reading that a supply of possibly Concorde-related engines were donated to the project. Anyone else recall this?

Very different engines.
the Vulcan donks are more related to the cross channel ferry engines then the Concorde lumps,

I'd love to know how you come to the conclusion for the first part of your statement. For the second part, I couldn't agree more !! (Although they have more pressing things on their minds, like their monthly bill at Claridges

Yeah, as I thought, I'm probably mixing stories up. I seem to have this vague memory of a report about something connected.

You may be thinking of the use of the Vulcan as a test bed for the Olympus engines used in Concorde.

Even though unfortunately XH558 won't be at Waddington will the Trade Stand still be at there?
