B45 on Alconbury dump

Post by mcduff » Sat May 05, 2012 6:35 pm

Hi, this is a long shot , I know, but does anyone have the serial of the North American B45 Tornado that finnished it's days on the dump at Alconbury? Exact date unknown , but thought to be 1970's. Apparently , it is mentioned in Wrecks & Relics, but so far that's all I know.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Cheers......John

A bit more on this - 47-056/56 was based at Alconbury with the 86BS, part of Sculthorpe's 47BW, until its retirement in the spring of '58. It appeared on the dump later that year. When I saw it in 1964 I think it still had a blue fin flash.

Many thanks for info. I was told from another source that it was 47056, and I guess this fits in with your serial, since 1947 was the fiscal year they were ordered. I was told it was there in the 1970's or 1980's, but I thought that was unlikely, since most 47th BW B45's were phased out in 1958.

It was lying on its belly substantially complete on the East side of the main runway near the TACAN/radar shack. I didn't get a close up look but the cockpit area seemed undamaged.

It was on the fire dump until the mid 60's when it was sold for scrap.

Hi all, found an interesting angle on this B45 thread. If you look on YouTube , there's a video entitled RAF Sculthorpe, there is a still towards the end of the clip, clearly showing '56 on the dump!
Again thanks to all who have contributed to this thread.
Cheers. McDuff
