No Sentinel R1 for RAF Museum
No Sentinel R1 for RAF Museum
After recent announcement of sale of R1 aircraft. Is it the sign of the times that the RAF Museum is not allocated a R1 ?
Re: No Sentinel R1 for RAF Museum
The tender isn't a for sale tender, it says at the bottom the MOD will not pay for their removal.
The tender is to basically scrap and salvage usable bits, with the winning company selling on the bits from what I understand, that being their profit. There's nothing to say a museum trust cant apply for one of the aircraft, or once empty the winner can sell a shell to a museum, the tender does state the winner must remove the a/c them selves, so basically the MOD are washing their hands of them.
So although it looks bleak, there is a possibility of one ending up in a museum. I know Newark were offered a Nimrod R1 for not a lot of money and they turned that down, wonder if they would do the same for a Sentinel?

Shame either Newark or Cosford would have been the ideal places for a Sentinel.
Re: No Sentinel R1 for RAF Museum
Where would you put a Nimrod or Sentinel at Newark?
Re: No Sentinel R1 for RAF Museum
I thought a Sentinel to Newark would be as a sign of local Airspace with it's closeness to RAF Lincolnshire.

Re: No Sentinel R1 for RAF Museum
No room at this 'inn' for any more large aircraft - as I've stated before in several locations; one of the best (difficult) decisions that I've helped make at NAM, was pulling out of acquiring a Nimrod, one of my favourite aircraft. Basically the future planning for the collection on our own land, would be rendered impossible by another 'biggie'!
Sorry folks!!
Re: No Sentinel R1 for RAF Museum
As NAM Updater has stated.
The problems are simple.
Keeping another airframe outside in the open adds even more to the limited resources of most museums. Without hangarage or a building I'm afraid more may yet go the same way as the above on tender. But you'll have to wait till early next year. to see what happens. Some stuff that was doomed has been saved this year (Manston and Shawbury this month is one example)
You need all the will in the world (and an awful lot of money) to move big stuff.

Re: No Sentinel R1 for RAF Museum
While we, as in aircraft nerds, all appreciate the Sentinel, when museums' resources are as limited as they are today they need to be selective when it comes to acquisitions. More people are going to be interested in seeing something 'sexy' than a business jet with some bumps on it, regardless of how much service they've put in recently.
Re: No Sentinel R1 for RAF Museum
Surely the fact that only 5 were ever in service will make them a very rare item for a Museum, and if possible one should be saved for future generations to see, before they are all broken up?
Re: No Sentinel R1 for RAF Museum
If the MOD can not even offer spare Tucano T1's to museums what chance a Sentinel. All the Tucano's got sold as jobs lots for big bucks to American operators.
MOD know the price of everything and value of nothing.
Same thing has happened with Cranwell's KingAirs and Shawbury's Squirrels, OK both types were never owned by the MOD but no effort seems to have been made to 'buy back' examples for preservation and recording the history these types have had with the RAF.

Re: No Sentinel R1 for RAF Museum
Seems funny the MOD cant seem to afford anything for preservation yet they can spend billions on 2 big floating targets which due to fuel costs will probably project our sea power round the Isle of Wight
