Airfield/village Memorials
Airfield/village Memorials
Hi all I don't know if there is a dedicated page to this topic but on many of our old airfield there are many great memorial stones so I thought I would share this one.

Re: Airfield/village Memorials
A couple of years ago Newark Air Museum compiled a free booklet that details the aviation memorials in Nottinghamshire - nearly 10,000 copies have been distributed.
We still have around 200 copies left, but once these have gone we're not sure if it will be updated / reprinted.
Details about how to request a free copy can be found on this weblink http://www.newarkairmuseum.org/Notts_Aviation

Re: Airfield/village Memorials
This one is at a church in South Cerney, Gloucestershire and it is for the crew of the first RAF C130 to crash which occurred at the west end of RAF Fairford in March 69. http://30squadronassociation.com/memori ... erney.html
This was one month before the first flight of Concorde 002 from Filton to Fairford.
Sadly 6 members of 30 Squadron were killed and two year old Hercules XV180 was destroyed

Re: Airfield/village Memorials
Most of the site of the former RAF Melksham 1940 -1964, is now occupied by commercial and private housing but the RAF connection lives on in many of the roads named after aircraft, people and stations, there is a memorial stone outside the ATC hut opposite the original gymnasium. The most recent memorial is that of a lamp near the Herman Millar building commemorating a Sgt. Kelly who stood under the lamp when based there keeping a watchful eye out for returning servicemen in the evening, "Kelly's Lamp" has recently been restored and is now solar powered.
Re: Airfield/village Memorials
Despite having lived in Melksham for the last 15 years and Bowerhill for 6+ years before that, I never knew about the lamp.
The pub in Bowerhill is called "The Pilot", but that is its third name. Its original name was "The Harrier" and it had a superb sign showing a Harrier blasting up from the pub. I'm not certain about the truth of this, but the story goes that, for the opening of the pub, a 1 Sqdn Harrier made a (very unofficial) diversion from a training exercise and landed in the car park!!!!
Just across the road from the pub can be found an information "pillar and plate" with a picture of Neville Duke's famous red Hunter F.3 WB188 flying over RAF Melksham in its heyday. A print of this picture hangs in the Snowberry Lane doctor's surgery. The real WB188, of course, was the gate guard at Melksham for a number of years (it is now at Tangmere).
Riverside Garage/MOT Centre (just down the B3107 Bradford-on-Avon road off the A350 roundabout past Countrywide) has Hunter GA.11 XF300 outside - it is painted up as WB188 but with some irrelevant nose art (see 3rd post in viewtopic.php?f=127&t=126808).

Re: Airfield/village Memorials
Apparently the Harrier only did a fly by and then billed the then pub owners as it had to deviate from its routing.
Re: Airfield/village Memorials
Very interesting information, didn't know about any of that!
