Summer downtime?

Post by Kevin Brewer » Fri Jul 28, 2023 10:12 am

Morning all

Thinking of making a visit sometime in the next couple of weeks. Can anyone advise if (and when) the base may be closed or operating at reduced levels for the summer holidays please?

Also, what time does flying typically start and end on an average day?

Any information gratefully received.

Don't believe any closure is planned, although lots of roads around the base will be closed for the Families Day on the 10th. Think in the past it can be quite quiet the following day too. They generally fly about 8:30-17:00. You can have periods of nothing and then it can suddenly very busy.

The period of "block leave" for the majority of the camp has been discontinued for a few years now. However there will be 'flying limits'. Depending on the displaying aircraft on Families day, some might depart right after the event finishes, some might depart they day after, where some have been known to stay over until the following Monday. Essentially it's a guess.

ALSO there will be flying restrictions in place for Tuesday 15th/ Wednesday 16th of August, which are the dates for the yearly Anglesey Show. Flying will take place, however limits will be in place depending on the wind direction on the day to limit the noise of the aircraft flying over the showground and upsetting the horses etc (also Mona will be "out of bounds" to RAF Valley for the 14th to 17th while the showground is being set up/ dismantled)

Beware that there has also been numerous appeals for people not to park at the end of 13 (Holyhead end of the main runway) due to roads being blocked for the residents in the area, crash gates being continually blocked; Actions were taken to install a gate to limit people from parking up at "Fraggle Rock/ Suicide Hill/ Miser's Mound" So go for 31 (Rhosneigr end of the runway) as there a lot more parking there (but beware of the many pot holes!) park up wither side of the track and then walk is the best idea.
If it wasn't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all...
