Display Lightning 1988

Post by Condor68 » Sat Apr 29, 2023 7:10 pm

While checking through some dates for something else, came across a Lightning XR749 at the 1988 Leuchars B.O.B.DAY.Does anyone know if it was just static or did it display. Not important just something I was doing to pass the time one night.

Thanks for any help.

Hi Keith,

It is listed in BAR/BARG Sept 1988 @ Leuchars show under "Elsewhere" with an M number 8934M so I would assume it was a BDRF/Decoy or similar

Last RAF Lightnings retired in June 1988, so definitely out of active service by then.

The last two F3s in service were the display pair used by 5 Squadron for the 1987 display season (the last year of the RAF solo) XR716/AQ and XP741/AR flown by Jon Fynes. XR749 was the famous hotship of the Lightning fleet and used in stern intercept trials on Concorde where other more modern prestigious types had failed. Its still in existence today preserved near Peterhead in a rendition of the LTF special scheme it once wore.
