Re: US Army Chinook at RAF Odiham 1979/80
There is nothing re. CH-47s x 3 in any of the 1979/80 'BAR' reports for Odiham. I haven't looked in detail at the movements logged at other bases in that timeframe, but it could be that the three you saw were here in support of the USAREUR deployment from Hanau to Greenham Common in 6/79. The AH-1S', OH-58As and UH-1Hs involved (all C Co., 503rd CAB, but with their badges painted out) were supported by around ten CH-47Cs (295th AvCo) in total when arriving on 13/6 and departing on 25-26/6.
The 'BAR' IAT '79 showlist for 22/6 includes three CH-47Cs - 74-22283, 74-22286 and 76-22677 - with '286 and '677 arriving on 13/6 and staying for the duration, then departing on 25/6 in the company of 74-22283 which had arrived on 20/6 and was on display at the show. Perhaps (and I'm not putting it any stronger than that) they were the three you saw at Odiham, operating in support of the training exercise taking place at Salisbury Plain Training Area?
Best I can do!

The CH-47 were not on an exercise AFAIK, there had been a grounding of CH-47`s due to a Transmission problem,if they were in support of an exercise, why had TDB and serial been covered?
Thanks for your help anyway
