P-51 45-11371

Post by mudhen15 » Wed Mar 17, 2021 1:33 pm

While tiding up old logs, have found conflicting info regarding the registration. Some sites and books have it listed as either N10515 or N1051S. The FAA database handily doesn't have either.

Is there a definitive answer or just interpreting the last digit/letter either way.

I'll have a trawl through the log books, I have it as N1051S. I used to visit most shows such as North Weald and West Malling.

OK then, 45-11371 was with the California ANG during 1945, it then went to the Nicaragua AF as GN121 in 1958, sold in the USA during 1963 and to N12067. To N1051S in 1970 then onto N751CB in 1985 and back again to N1051S. To UK in 1987 and marked as "Sunny V111" Sold back to USA 1994 as N51KF.
It was W/O 2-7-95 at Malone-Dufort Airport,NY.
It also served with Hampshire and Illinois ANG plus the Air Defence Command, it was with the Nicaraguan Af from 1958 till 1963.
When I saw it at Abingdon during 1987 it was coded VF-S as " Sunny V111".

Hope this helps,

Rob

Throwing the proverbial spanner into the works, looking through logbooks up to 1991, I have this as NL1051S. I noted it as such at North Weald on 14/5/88, West Malling on 28/8/89 and 27/8/90, Upper Heyford on 6/5/90 and Southend Airport on 2/6/90. But it was carrying N1051S when I saw it at North Weald on 18/5/91.

I am currently sitting here looking at slide of said A/c taken Boscombe Down - 13.06.1992 - IAT
and whilst I appear to have the uscr logged as NL1051S on appearence on the slide there is a gap where the L should be thus it reads as N 1051S
The serial is presented as 511371 whilst the code is showing as S. - Star/Bar VF The colour scheme is mainly silver/bare metal? with a red nose section & a blue cockpit area and tail rudder - and there is also a yellow teddy on tail

as you will see by my comment there appears to be a gap where the L was. but this is taken by starboard side could this be the old scenario where one side is NL and the other N-

Thanks for all the info. My main site for WW2 aircraft research, Warbird Registry, has it listed as N10515.
Can always rely on the knowledge and kindness on FC.

The yellow teddy was in connection with the Warbirds Show at West Malling and a couple of times at Wroughton. Quite a few participating aircraft were zapped with that sticker. It was in memory of Ted White who was involved with B-17 Sally B and came up with the idea of the airshow. However he never saw them to fruition as he was killed in his T-6 a few months before the first one.

The "L" denotes a limited airworthiness certificate.

Thanks for the info, always wondered what it meant. I know the NX prefix is experimental

Yep and for completeness, C was Standard and R for Restricted. Can't recall when these were applicable or if they still are. Will have to go and look it up.

Remember seeing NX used at the 1997 Nellis Airshow, and NL at the 2000 Langley Air Show.

C was commercial, wasn't it?
I should probably change my name to EGCC again.

Possibly Chris, however my source is from the FAA's Code of Federal Regulations:

I shall bow to the FAA's knowledge of their own registration system 😂

I photographed it at RAF Mildenhall in 1992, you can just see the N registration with the gap after the N.....
