RAF Tornado GR J* tail codes (not 27 Sqn)
RAF Tornado GR J* tail codes (not 27 Sqn)
Not quite a serial request, but looking for info on Tornado GR1/4s coded 'J*' etc in 1999/2000. Seemed to be primarily 14 & 17 Squadron aircraft, which had previously been coded 'B*' and 'C*' as one would expect. It didn't seem to last long, no more than three years, and only a handful of aircraft were so marked (eg ZD811/JJ from 14 Sqn). I'm interested to know why! Many thanks in advance.

Yes thanks. It's odd that other 14/17 Sqn retained normal squadron codes and the ones on this list were recoded back in 2001. Trying to figure out the logic behind it!

They were JRDF (Joint Rapid Deployment Force) Jets as from what I can remember Bruggen had the lead commitment for the role. They were also the highest mod state jets that spent most of there life in the gulf only returning for scheduled servicing especially the Vicon jets
