405 Magister Ex Fr AF ??

Post by JAWS » Tue Aug 04, 2020 2:29 pm

Anyone know when 405 Magister Ex French AF was imported to the USA , was it ever operational in the US (flying) any known locations and if it was ever assigned an N Number ?

This aircraft (incorrectly id'd here as N405DM Ex FM-35 Finnish AF)

No Fouga Magister experts out there ?

I recently stumbled upon this aircraft and all I can find out is it was in store at Chateaudun, and then there is the photo in 2006 in California where it is wrongly id'd as N405DM , nothing else.

I had a ferret through a load of websites back when you first posted about '405': various photos of the aircraft in question which reveal its French Air Force code and time at Buchanan Field, but there seems to be little info out their except a reference to it being stored on a runway in Germany (I think), but that was before its relocation to the California. Will keep on ferreting when I can catch a break from work!

I think that means the "German Runway" at Chateaudun , Mustang5861 , that's all I have found , I looked but so far can't find anything about its history since then. Thanks for looking , much appreciated .

One thing I forgot to say - I had trawl through cancelled registrations on the US civil register, in the hope that had it been cancelled there might be some info on when it was imported and registered, but no luck. Therefore, I have to assume it is still registered, though whether or not it is tucked up at Buchanan Field would likely only be confirmed by a sighting.

Yeah , I looked for cancelled reg's as well , and also through MAR but no mention of when it left France. All I want say at his point is it is not at Buchanan Field anymore and hasn't been for a few years but I doubt it will ever fly again. It seems it never hit the US civil register, as far as I can tell. Thanks again Mustang5861.

I have had a look at this and the last entry for it being stored at Chateaudun was in EMOOS 2007. The entry is among those that are no longer present and reads :

405/312-TF CM170 stored runway JUN94-OCT96- Auctioned NOV97? to USA.

AS you have already discovered it has not taken up US markings so maybe it was purely for spares or an abandoned restoration project.
The photo in the link of it at Buchanan in 2006 is strange though, why is it linked to FM35 when it clearly is not N405DM - I think it is the photographer as there is another photo of it here :
https://www.airport-data.com/aircraft/p ... 36511.html

The entry in the Demobbed website says the last sighting at Chateaudun for 405 is Sep 11!
