Kinloss 1966

Post by eLaReF » Thu Oct 03, 2019 10:47 am

On this page, http://www.clourie.co.uk/aircraft/page9/page9.html Colin Lourie has various Kinloss Dump pix from 1966
The Anson was once VV950 and the Meteor WL367
Looking for ID's of the Shackleton & Vampire(?)

TIA

Shackleton would be WB846 (later joined by WB847).

WB846 Shackleton MR.1A, f/f 14.11.51, Aw/Cn 30.11.51, d/d 38 MU 12.12.51, to 224 Sqn 5.2.52 becoming 'B-P', transferred to 120 Sqn 30.8.54 and recoded 'A-G', to MOTU 29.10.56 as 'G' until Soc 26.3.58. Allocated 7561M 26.3.58 for ground instructional use with MOTU Kinloss until Soc 29.2.64 and relegated to the dump. First burnt 2.2.69.

WB847 Shackleton T.4, f/f 20.11.51, Aw/Cn 30.11.51, d/d 38 MU 20.12.51 and placed in storage until prepared for issue, d/d 236 OCU 11.3.52 as 'C-J', to Avro at Langar 22.8.56 for T.4 conversion, ferried to Waddington for Avro Bracebridge Heath CWP before delivery to 23 MU 13.2.58. Prepared for issue to MOTU and became 'N' on arrival 2.58. Underwent Phase II Mods at AWA Bitteswell 4.60-11.60, returning to MOTU still as 'N'. Transferred to St Mawgan with MOTU 7.65 and recoded 'Z' 7.66. Wfu 6.68 and allocated 8020M 5.6.68 for display on Kinloss's gate, but placed on fire dump 12.3.69.

I think your "Vampire" is a Venom night fighter.

Or could it be the mortal remains of Vampire FB.5 VZ286 of 236 OCU, which suffered a bird strike on approach to Kinloss on 27/1/56 and was declared a write-off after landing at the base, then SOC as Cat. 5(C) on 8/3/56?

No it couldn't since the aircraft in the picture is a 2 seater.

Venom NF3 WX794 D/151 is the beastie you're missing.
WB846 certainly is the Shackelton.
I used to sneak in when I was a wee boy and kid on I was a bomber pilot.

Fair point; thanks for putting me right. Glad I put it as a question rather than a statement!
