B-52s over Lossiemouth 20/06/85

Post by Mike » Wed Apr 03, 2019 3:26 pm

Noted over Lossiemouth on 20/06/85 at 11.37 were 3 x B-52s following each other Westbound at around FL270, does anyone have any idea where these were flying from at the time and the serials if possible please?

According to 'BAR', seven B-52Gs of the 2nd BW (76489, 76506, 76512, 76519, 80210, 92586 and 92599) arrived at Fairford on 24/5 and stayed until 20/6. No other details on what they were here for and no mention of the overflight x3 on 25/5 in the Lossie movements listing, so that's as close as I can narrow it down - assuming the three seen over Lossie were from this deployment.

Hope this helps,
M

Not heard of this before but not surprised by it as the UK had been occasionally overflown by flights of B-52's on `round robin` missions from the US since the mid-70's. What is certain is that they didn't originate from the UK and as mustang has pointed out those deployed to Fairford didn't arrive until 24/5. Based on what had happened previously my hunch is that these were most likely to be B-52G's with a maritime mission from the 2nd, 42nd or 320th BW's.

Thanks to you both for your replies, have re-checked my logs and the date was actually the 20th of June 1985. This would have been the day that the deployment to Fairford ended and these must have been on their way home on a strange routing, it's long-shot I know, but does anyone have a log for Fairford for this day with departure times please?

Well, well, I happened to be at Fairford on that day when they all returned to Barksdale!
76489, 76512 and 92599 all departed 1000 -1002, 80210 D1103, 76506 D1104, 76519 and 92586 D1205 (all times local). c/s were Huck21-27, individual tie-ups not noted.

Thanks Graham, that's perfect and what a stroke of luck that you were there for their departure!
76489, 76512 and 92599 look like they're the winning numbers.

Great stuff, and thanks again. :thumb:
