Brize Norton 13 June 1993

Post by Mustang531 » Wed Jan 01, 2025 8:36 am

Been trawling through the old lig books, trying to fill gaps. On the above date, I called in at Brize Norton and I can only assume it must have been a warm day. I noted a group of six fast jets parked together. The list I have is as follows:-
Harrier T 4N 899 NAS.
Harrier GR.7.
Buccaneer S 2B 12 San.
Jaguar RAF.
Tornado F.3 56 Sqn coded A4.
Tornado GR.1 or GR.4 617 Sqn.
If anyone is able to fill in the gaps, I'd be grateful,
MTIA.

Hi Mustang, according to Centreline (Thames Valley Aviation Society magazine) the visitors that weekend were in connection with 216 Sqn's 75th anniversary event. They list the following as being present:
Jaguar GR1A 'GO' 54Sq
Harrier GR5 ZD329/M 20Sq
Tornado GR1 ZA399/AJ-G 617Sq
Tornado F3 ZE794/A4
Plus an unidentified Buccaneer that arrived from Manston on the 12th using call sign "Spare 4".

They also list 2x 899Sq Harrier T4's as arriving on the 11th as one of them made an emergency landing, but it's not clear how long they both stopped. For the record they were: ZB603/718 & ZB605/721

Just adding to Andrewn's post

From BAR/BARG 04-93

54Sqdn received Jaguar GR.1A XZ111 as 'GO' (ex 'EL'/6 Sqdn) by 22.3, the aircraft
having re-adopted its sand camouflage mid-month.

And from BAR/BARG 06-93

MANSTON As mentioned on AP3146 under Lossiemouth, the Buccaneer S.2B's of 12 and 208 Sqdns arrived here on 7.6 in order to mount this year's Queen's Birthday Flypast on 12.6.
The following aircraft arrived on 7.6:
12 Sqdn XN981, XT280, XV332, XV359, XX885, XX889. XX893, XX894, XX899, XX900.
208 Sqdn XV168, XV333, XV352, XV361, XV864, XV865, XV867, XX892, XX895, XX901, XZ431.
Of the above, only XV332 carried no unit marks, although 12 Sqdn replaced S.2B XX900 with another unmarked example )XW530) by 10.6. 12 Sqdn S.2B XX885 still carries its "Sky
Pirates legend, while it and the following Buccaneers all wear the grey camouflage: XV332, XV352, XX889, XX894 and XX895. 12 Sqdn Hunter T.7B WV318/A (black scheme) and T.7 XL614
were used as "whips" during the rehearsals, with the former returning to Lossiemouth on 12.6.
The rehearsal on 10.6, using Wittering as datum, involved the following Buccaneers: XT280, XV168, XV332, XV333, XV359, XV361, XV864, XV865, XX885, XX889, XX892, XX893. XX894, XX895, XX899 and XZ131. plus air spares XN981, XV352, XV867 and XX901.
After marginal weather threatened the flypast (the weather-ship Buccaneer, callsign "Blackburn Weather Check", even failed to complete its run some two hours prior to the scheduled time on target over Buckingham Palace of 1300 hours local),
"Blackburn Formation" took off at 1219 hours local, as follows:
Blackburn Red 1/4 XX889, XV359, XX893 and XV864
Blackburn Blue 5/8 XV361, XZ431, XX894 and XV865
Blackburn Gold 9/12 XV168, XV333, XX892 and XX895
Blackburn Black 13/16 XX899, XV332, XT280 and XX885
Blackburn Spare 1/2 XX901 and XV867
Departure details for Buccaneers XN981 and XV352 are at present unknown.
Buccaneer S.2B XW530 arrived at Lossiemouth ahead of the formation, using a normal squadron callsign; therefore was this aircraft the weather-ship mentioned earlier?

If I'm reading it correctly and the info is correct the Buccaneer would have been XN981 as XN981 and XV352 were the only 2 unaccounted for on departure and XV352 was 208 Sqn
