Bassingbourn Air Show 1978
Long shot but I'm looking for the ID of a Grasshopper TX.1 seen at the Bassingbourn Air Show on 27th May 1978! Thanks in advance!
Re: Bassingbourn Air Show 1978
Unfortunately, BARG confirms a Grasshopper was present but doesn’t give an ID for it.

No mention of a Grasshopper in SEAR or Anglia Air News either.

I believe that the Grasshopper is/was XP490. At least it started life as such, but by the time it has had a few wing/fuselage replacements it's anybody's guess! Perhaps that is why it spent so long

Not sure if this helps, but from my notes of the event there was a Piper L-4H Grasshopper there; it was: G-BCNX ex43-29877 coded 540. I believe there is a photo of it there on “Airliners.net"

Re: Bassingbourn Air Show 1978
Interesting. I've seen the photo of the J-3C Cub (Grasshopper) dated 28/5/78 and it is well marked with IDs but I have no mention in my log book but I was there the day before so it might not have been present then. My "field" logbook entry simply says "Grasshopper (repair)" but my contemporaneous "tidy" logbook shows it as a Grasshopper TX.1 so I guess the only possibility is XP490. Can Blackboxromeo remember where he got his info from? memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=8491& ... 55b38aad1c
When I was in the cadets I used to fly in them occasionally and we were always breaking them and sending them off for repair! I've had close encounters back then with WZ773, WZ784 and WZ819.

I have the Midland Counties book Airshows 1978. It lists L-4H Cub G-BCNX as being present on the Sunday only.
I will never forget the 2 Canadian F104 that day.
