Hi Pringster :P

Plenty of good intel available on here to help you out, but perceived wisdom from many should point you in the direction of the Uniden Bearcat UBC125XLT

Unless you can get your hands on a Yupiteru mvt - 7100... love my trusty Yupi.

If you can find a good second hand one they are really good... not state of the art anymore but still a good hand held device.

Failing that... go as Paddy suggests... I believe it is a very good scanner.

Hi Tim :P

You know this old Luddite is still a Yuppi fan and user

Won’t be getting rid of my trusty 7100 or 9000 ones anytime soon ;)

Hope to see you soon at MH/LN :D

Hello there,
I'm a south-westoner so not a huge amount of military activity near me.
I'm looking for a cheap (yes I know :halo: ) scanner (which doesn't have to be military capable) for the upcoming airshow season, the only air event near here, and local Exeter int traffic.
I know literally nothing on the scanner front so any help appreciated!
Is it more worth while to buy a high-end military scanner?

Many thanks

I will leave others to recommend a scanner but there is more military activity in the south west than you realise. For example helicopters from Yeovilton and Culdrose and transport aircraft plus fast jets at high level all very receivable in Exeter.
I would definitely recommend you buy a scanner for UHF as well as VHF.
Suggest you also join one of the forums that list military transmissions and frequencies.
It makes it much more interesting.
Good luck,
Alan

Hi cat1

Great advise there from Hellicopter44... and ref the Scanner... I think Paddy's advise at the top of this thread would be the best choice.

I'm still a preferred user of the Yupiteru 7100 but this is an old hand held devise not available anymore from off the shelf but some are out there on ebay etc... it still works amazingly well but if it was to pack up on me I would probably go get the UBC125XL.

Let's us know what you decide on... Good luck :thumb:

Another +1 for the elusive Yupi 7100; sat in mid Lincolnshire and picking up AAR, Waddington, Coningsby, all the way south through Lakenheath and Mildenhall.

UNC125XLT! You’ll not get a better radio, in my experience. But, do get a replacement antenna as the stock antennas aren’t fantastic.

Could anyone reccomend an antenna for a Unidem Bearcat 125. I don't seem to pick up many transmissions and the ones I do are very broken. TIA.

Hi tiger 1,

Yupi and Uiden seem to be split more by opinion and less by price.

will go with the Uniden i think, there are more new ones in the market which drives the price down somewhat.

I know there's no such thing as a stupid question

but this is a serious contender.

I've seen many people recommend the uniden bear cat 125, what is the difference between that and the UBC75XLT and why is the 125 the preferred scanner?
i know 125 has a larger memory, would that be a noticeable difference?

Many thanks

Try comparing the frequency ranges of the two scanners, then you'll find out that the UBC75XLT doesn't do military UHF frequencies. Simples.

By the way, you are not a newbie anymore.

A good scanner is one that meets your price and you master its menus to your needs, an air band scanner is just that, Nothing fancy stores frequencies and you can listen through the speaker or ear piece.
They vary in price from cheap £50 ish to well over £500.
Everybody has a scanner they like but each has its own programming problems, don't buy an expensive one if you are not PC literate or you will be asking for trouble

along with Paddyboy and other Yuppy users both my 7100 are working fine
i used to listen to Mainsail with a Long wire full length of back garden that was interesting at night listening to Anderson/ Andrews/ Ascension and Croughton etc
cant keep a good scanner down  :thumb:
