Active airfields

Post by Nuski » Sun Apr 18, 2021 11:47 am

Hi,
First newbie question if you can please humour me. I am trying to get back into spotting again but given the 20 year break I am completely out of the loop when it comes to active airfields and aircraft. I bought myself the new Military aircraft markings edition but was shocked to notice how few aircraft bases seem to be left, so I am wondering if somebody could please let me know what airfields are really worth visiting anymore?
Any help would be greatly appreciated and many thanks.

Good Afternoon
If you can please indicate which part of the country you reside it may prompt more local responses
They are various sub-forums for more specialist aviation subject threads but you will only have access to all areas of the forum once you have posted five messages as one of the introductory measures for new members.
Perhaps if you were to post a message or two detailing which military aircraft you have seen in your area or questions relating to a sighting or local base activity that would prompt something and as you reply to the messages you would soon pass the minimum number of post to gain full forum access
Most important of course - please note and read the forum rules on Covid restrictions currently in place (top of the list of forum subjects entitled 'FC Position During Lockdown') as this is directly relevant to message content on threads relating to airfield current acivity
Hope this helps and enjoy the forum

I live in the east midlands with Cottesmore and Wittering my local bases which doesn't bode well for my chances of seeing much :)

Hi Nuski

I would say from your location the obvious airfields would be...

Cranwell for trainers.

Coningsby for Typhoons

Marham for the F35's

Lakenheath for F15's

Mildenhall for US transports and tankers.

Great advice offered already by
Evergreen 44 ref the rules and Covid Restrictions.

Have fun when you venture out.

Yes, there's lots of Typhoons at Coningsby and also the BBMF with their Spitfires, Hurricanes, Chipmunks, Dakota & Lancaster. RAF Waddington isn't far from Coningsby with it's fleet of Shadows & Sentries, there's also some Sentinels there - but these have been retired now. Waddington has a wonderful cafe & viewing area on the A15 which is known as the WAVE (Waddington Airfield Viewing Experience).

Thanks chaps-All useful stuff

Nuski, as you navigate around the forum there are regional threads for the airfields with individual airfield topics. Once you have gone through some subjects of interest you will pick up hints and tips from previous posts

If you look at photo threads too you will notice which vantage points are used at the airfields and the challenges they present

All good fun - when it is safe to do so

In the meantime you can pick up enough information from the forum to plan your new adventures

Enjoy both and stay safe
