Advice on unknown aircraft

Post by Moldsight » Tue Nov 10, 2020 11:05 am

Hi all,

Hope this isn't to silly a question, if so please be gentle with me :halo:

Does anyone know how to find out what an unknown (Military?) aircraft actually is on ADS-B Exchange.

Aircraft today was flying (10.40am local) from E. Europe over N. Norfolk coast with numbers of 162801 and AE040C, no idea what that means so any help, websites, tips or a basic education would be most welcome.

Thank you in advance
Moldy

p.s. ok found this, hope it also helps anyone https://www.ads-b.nl/index.php?pageno=3 ... ktype=B350
it was a Hawker Beechcraft Corp King Air 350C

Make your a cuppa and prepare yourself for an hour or so of fun.

Open up, then press the different letters and see what happens. It helps to write on paper letter pressed and result.

When you are fully conversant with the application, post your results in the appropriate section for others to learn too

Thank you C24.... I think :S
Had to read it twice in case I was Hypoxic.

Spent a good while getting to grips with things today so no need to ask advice quite so readily.

Cuppa.... check
Paper..... check

You could also try freedar which is also useful

Each tracker has different receivers so aircraft are not always shon on both or any.

Mike. No idea, senility can be a pain, memory loss doesn’t help and hand trembling can contribute to typos.

C24,

Sorry if you are having problems, it wasn't meant as a jibe. Trying to be lighthearted that is all in these very trying times.
Thank you for the advice will have a look at Freedar tomorrow.

I'm sure you have heard of the phrase "the one-eyed leading the blind".
Well, I'm not even certain my "one eye" is up to much these days, but hopefully I'll make you laugh with the following story.

Ignoring the fact you already posted an answer, I saw your "162801" and immediately thought US Navy.
And of course hex code "AExxxx" is invariably US Military. Perhaps you knew that already?

So my next move was to simply put "162801" into an internet search page. Unfortunately some serials are also useful part numbers for things like printer cartridges, or tins of spaghetti, so it doesn't always work. So I added "US Navy 162801" and came up with...
a Grumman E-2C Hawkeye. :thumb:
(Meh, sometimes it works...)

Except that clearly isn't the case here.

Fortunately you have already found the ADSB-NL site, and come up with a King Air (C-12) so all's good.

FWIW I took a look at that flight and your King Air MC-12W took off from Brno BRQ (Czech Republic), and landed at Edinburgh (EDI)

And then I even found a related thread here on Fighter Control
viewtopic.php?p=1242838

Fun Fact - the next aircraft in the Hex sequence is AE040D, which bears the serial 162782 (i.e. in the same ball park as my mistaken US Navy Hawkeye) but to show how random these things might be, that Hex matches up to a Boeing E-6 Mercury (a 707 with lots of strange aerials).

I suppose I should ask right off; are you comfortable with Hex codes ? For myself, 12 months ago I didn't know much either. It's been an interesting learning curve.

Never forget;
There are 10 kinds of people in this world; those that understand binary, and those that don't. :P

Hi PB,
No trees any more, sadly. I’ve managed ladders to clear leaves from the gutters and also to clean the upstairs windows.
Oh! The joys of saggy bottoms and layers of fat.
Ah well, I can still get my pants over my trousers... πŸš€

Moldsight I’m exaggerating. Only deaf in one ear. Have fun on FC

Right, that’s it. Nearly dawn, gotta go, off to fight the foe.

I took a screenshot on iPad yesterday of freedar showing C130’s track low level over the Borders.

I’d no idea how to get it on here for you to see.

Here goes

Hi C24,

Brilliant and thank you for all that info.
Trying some more programs at the moment FR24 and AirNav Radarbox, which look ok for double/triple checking aircraft. Have used FR24 in the past and forgotten all about it tbh.

Brilliant evening yesterday listening to airband, fantastic reception and great chat from the pilots off of N. Norfolk learning to approach tanker and connect to cage. So many Typhoons up there must have been fun at Conninsby.

Like yourself I'm no longer a spring chicken and annoyed didn't get back into this wonderful hobby/pastime/interest? many years ago.

Conninsby has just woken up with Apollo flight going back out to tartn39 tanker, good day ahead again it seems. Need to go sit outside a bit though as sun is shining. Cuppa rather than a brew order of the day.

And yes I do remember Hex from old comm20/64 days trying to code. On that note I could resist this one for you.

There are 10 types of people in the world.
Those who understand hexadecimal, and F the rest.

You could always try typing the hex code into this forum's "Search" box.
