Hi Wayne, and welcome aboard.

Re: New to FC or not so new? Introduce yourself here.
Hi, I am Wiggy, from northwest Kent and the first thing to say is, no I don't have a wig but my old workmates thought my hair was so bad it must be one. So the name stuck for about thirty years. I have always been interested in aircraft for as long as I can remember and must have made 50 Airfix kits as a boy. A constant visitor to airshows and remember Sally B's first trip to Biggin Hill. Started photography around 1977 and it became a serious hobby by 1980, and with three friends trolled around the many airforce bases in the south and midlands, getting to Binbrook on days out. Did most of the main airshows and 'flying in days' for the next 10 or so years and then learnt to fly at Biggin. I did little photography during the nineties but retired in 2005 and finished flying in 2007 to take up the pictures again. Now I have plenty of time and am not spending a fortune on film but where are all the aircraft!!!! Oh the memories.
That's just about it, all I have to do is work out how post some pictures on this forum.

Hi guys welcome to FC.Waltzer7 wrote:Hi!
I'm a newbie from Warwickshire plus we have an old vintage model of what we think is a Boeing Flying Fortress B17. Is there a section where I could post photos of it so that you can help identify it?
Plus how do you post photos of the plane on here?
Thanks
We have a dedicated modelling section further down the forum list.

Hi and welcome to FC.
No flying in the Mach loop at weekends, only Mon-Friday.
I wouldn't like to recommend a particular place to take 2 small children, due to the harsh climbs and chances of falls off high places!
Perhaps other members have taken children up and can recommend somewhere?

North Lincolnshire based and interested in helicopters and military transports. Recent helicopter activity prompted my joining the forum.

Winging my way in from the USA. I did ten years in the US Navy. I especially like fighter jets from around the world. I had to signup with my laptop so that I could post here with my tapatalk.

Hi everyone!
I'm Mark. I have had an interest in aircraft ever since I can remember and I'm lucky that my lads share my views. They once chose to go to the excellent Midland Air Museum over McDonalds! I happened to mention that to a curator and he took us on a guided tour opening up aircraft including the mighty Vulcan! What a privilege.
Despite being nearly 50 I still have an almost child-like fascination and HAVE to 'look up' whenever my well tuned ears hear something interesting. My long suffering Wife often mocks this! "Is it a Chinook? Is it a Spitfire?" When it's obviously a Robinson or Cessna! lol!
I live in a village near Rugby that fortuitously is on the approach to Coventry's Baginton Airport. It also appears to be on a military transit route as we frequently have overflights. At my poor man's airshow this weekend I was treated to the RR Spitfire and an F7 Meteor on Saturday followed on Sunday by a DH Rapide and a biplane that I didn't recognise that flew in a Southerly direction in the morning and retraced it's route 'home' in the afternoon. Any ideas what it could have been?
I love airshows and have my tickets for Cosforf and Fairford. I suppose that airshows like childhood Summers always seemed better years ago: Lightning, Navy and RAF Phantoms and the 104g Starfighter for instance but there certainly is still something that keeps me coming back for more. I love the smell of oil and aviation fuel. The sonic 'massage' of a jet on reheat! Infact I have already started packing the car for next weekend. I wouldn't even do that for a holiday!
My favourite aircraft by era SE5a, Hurricane, Sabre but love the Vampire too. C130 and Chinook.
I will invest in a scanner this week. I can almost hear the collective groan as I type this question! I will probably go for a Uniden BC125XLT as I only want to listen in at airshows or to my local airport rather than scanning everything. Is there any reason why I should opt for the 3500 instead when I would probably be on frequencies that I know are being used?
Best wishes,
Mark

Hi Folks,
New to FC - really nice resource.
23 years in the USAF - had the good sense to marry and English gal and we 'retired' here in '93. Retired for good in April. We're just off the Departure end of 29 (or the approach to 11 - depends who you look at it).
As for Mildenhall closing: The Germans won't let aircraft operate below 1,000 feet, for sure (maybe higher by now). They won't allow, I'm told, refuelling over Germany, nor allow a combat mission to depart directly from there.
I reckon, for what it's worth, that a President who has any concept of what the USAF does (Obama doesn't) will re-think this sop to American voters p****d off by base closures at home - at least I hope so.
The alternative uses for the base so far suggested are nonsensical - a civilian airport (doesn't have the infrastructure or road hub), a drag racing venue (will get closed down by Injunction the first time they fire up 1000 pound engines with no mufflers - the Mildenhall Stadium case set a precedent), a warehousing centre (again, lousy road hubs).
The USAF gave two much better bases (RAF Bentwaters and Woodbridge) back - after spending millions upgrading them - 'cause Major got made PM and said they couldn't close Alconbury (wanted a free home for his security folks, and wouldn't have a base close in his constituency) and the local Council hasn't done much with them.
Last, but not least, I think I've seen the lease on Diego Garcia is up for renewal, which gives the UK Government (if they have a clue) quite a bit of bargaining power.
On the down side, as far as we're concerned, RAF Fairford has, as far as I know, the only 'unlimited' runway in USAFE, and USAFE has determinedly resisted handing it back for at least 25 years.
Anyway, best of luck to all of you - and thanks for a really interesting web site.
Kindest Regards
P.S. - anyone know where I could get a copy of the SIDs and STARs for Mildenhall?
