Hi everyone
Just a quick hello and thank you for letting me onboard.
I have been mainly a spotter for around 50 years, catching the bug at the first event I recall attending, 1973 Middle Wallop airshow.
Spent 32 years in the RAF and travelled all over the world whilst working on a variety of aircraft, Buccaneer, VC10, Hercules, Puma/ Chinook and Tornado. Loved it miss it and visited some interesting places.
Currently work in Tewkesbury repairing aircraft hydraulic components.
Looking forward to exploring and reading the many forums
Mick

Good after morning all

I've finally given in and took the plunge to join. I don't normally do forums as my 45 year old ADHD brain doesn't cope well with the ergonomics of how they work but I'm sick of not knowing and when I'm on the socials everyone keeps referring to FC like "according to fighter control it's this or it's that" :D so here we are

A quick bit about me. I have way too many hobbies (according to the wife :grr: ) but right now my favouritest hobby is military aviation, spotting, scanning, tracking, photographing etc. Scanning is the big one for me as I've been a radio geek for 34 years, started with CB and went right through Ham radio and stuff. my scanner is always on and my eyes are always to the sky's so if you have room for one more and you can be a little patient with me I'd love to get involved.

So for now I'll bid you all best 73's and catch you further down the log

Ok so this is how it all started. Should have most likely been my first post but here goes.

My dad was previously been in Military and I was lucky enough to go on a few Hercules flights and have the pleasure of being in the cockpit when one was landing at RAF Lyneham (showing my age here). My favorite film was by far Top Gun and is the only film I've watched over and over again. Sadly my dream of becoming a pilot never materialized and is probably the one and only regret I would have in life to this day. I have regularly attended RIAT for as long as I can remember(15years+) and have always loved the displays and listening to the teams and pilots on their static displays.

My son and I started to watched the planes on Flight Radar and one day he noticed on social media that a B2 was being diverted to RAF Fairford and much to my delight he asked if we could go and see it as it was due to land soon. So I thought why not and we went off like storm chasers to find this thing as we only lived down the road really from the base. My son was the first to spot it and it was a few hundred feet off the ground but it was clearly the B2, the excitement for us was massive. we ended up at the wrong end of the runways and missed touchdown and not knowing the area a chap kindly told us that if we go down the the other end of the airfield we could see them parked up as it was two and not one that had been diverted. so we did this and were totally captivated by the whole experience. There they were a pair of B2's parked up, it is my favorite plane by far, they both looked like something out of stars wars sat there. The were due to leave late that night but my lad had school the next day so sadly we missed them leaving.

After having had a keen interested in military planes the B2's coming in that day really started something for me. It led to buying a camera, a radio scanner, building a ADS-B receiver and then to learning about radio frequencies, antenna building, NOTAMs and loads more. Its all a big steep learning curve but I'm so enjoying it and excited about what lies ahead.
