Re: RAF Waddington Diorama
I think even 1/72 scale would make the runway about ~100ft long. The whole base would have a ~400ft perimeter.
It'd be an interesting group build if everyone chipped in with aircraft for it.

Re: RAF Waddington Diorama

Re: RAF Waddington Diorama
While there might not be kits for them all, I'm sure a scratch builder would be willing to take up the challenge. It would be epic to have models of them all.Softbill Man wrote:Now, i know we wont get all the aircraft models in kits, so i was thinking of having some form of photograph in the places where models cannot be built. I am prepared for this to be quite big, so dont let any plans be sidelined because of this issue.
Re: RAF Waddington Diorama
Just some of my thoughts on an interesting idea.
How about using the grass square in the middle of the WAVE. You could build the runway & taxiways from concrete imbedded in the grass. At 1/72 scale the runway would need to be about 38 meters long, which I think is to big for the space available in the square. but would the war time configuration fit?

Re: RAF Waddington Diorama
Good luck with this very interesting build. Probably see it finished in about say 2 or 3 Years time. Not quite a real base but I'm intending to get something sorted out to put together a small imaginary RAF Fighter Base for my mini Die Cast Collection. I've been planning that for Years.
Good luck for the Waddo project and look forward to seeing pics of the result.

Re: RAF Waddington Diorama
john the lank on the stand is 1/144 scale
the little planes are at least 1/350 there are no kits of your planes in that scale ill try and find some refs to show the sizes your talking about
this is a net steal credit to phil whoever he is but if you look at the objects in the pic you will see the relative size

Re: RAF Waddington Diorama
Interesting project John, are you planning to permanently display it somewhere at the WAVE ?
Reading your list and there is something you might like to add. As you probably know Avro had a large maintance and repair facility at Bracebridge Heath, after the war this was used to build two of the Avro 707 research aircraft use during the Vulcan development. WZ736 was first flown from Waddington on 20 Feb 1953 followed by WZ744 on 1st July 1953, later WD280 was modified with a new wing at Bracebridge and flew from Waddington on 6th March 1956. Also you did not mention Islander or Shadow.
Although it is probably goes beyond your original idea but just think of all the foreign types that have used RAF Waddington for ACMI, deployments and exercises !!!
