Hi all,
Just finished this HobbyBoss 1:72 Grumman F-14B, finished as BuNo.162919 "Devil 101" of VF-74, USS Saratoga, US Navy, circa 1992. Built OOB, and finished in the Light grey scheme using Mr Color 338. this was my first attempt at a Hobbyboss kit, and overall i quite liked it, most parts went together well, but i had issues with the canopy fit and large decals (probably me!!). Have ordered an Academy F-14 to see how they compare (have read they are the best of the easily available ones in the UK??!!), did the old Revell one a few years back (the darker grey one in the bottom pic!) and thought that was a very enjoyable kit. Would certainly get another HB Tomcat again though, especially for the price and range of decals included

Nicely done , but , not too sure the colour scheme is correct

I may be sticking my neck out , and happy to be shot down in flames

but I dont recall seeing any F-14B's in the Light Gull Grey scheme , they were all TPS

Saw the A/C you have made onboard USS Saratoga in 1992 in Palma and it was TPS
I know I might sound picky

But my main interest in modeling is colour schemes and researching them
Again great job
Cheers
Paul

Hi Paul, These were some of the shots I worked from, also some from books

Found a few of them in light grey, hadn't seen any before, which is what intrigued me to do it! Still feels too light to me, but went with that colour as per instructions and will return to normal greys for the next ones!!
I also agree that 1992 seems a bit late, nearer 88/89 in my opinion but I always trust the instruction sheets

Hi Jon
No problem , looking at the links you sent the light gull grey ones are all 1980's F-14A's look at the engines

the one you modelled which you have a pic of there is in TPS from Navarchives
Can only think the instructions are wrong ...would not be the first time

I find that after over 50 years of modelling this is not an uncommon occurrence , even some of the "specialist" decal companies got it wrong , many a time I have had to re do kits that just didnt look right , and after a bit of research found the answer
Keep up the good work mate
Cheers
Paul

oh fudge, wish I'd known that at the time as they state f-14B!!! Oh well, I guess I'll have to strip it and repaint!

Thats a bit drastic Jon

If you google the serial of the machine you are making in future thats normally a good first step

or use the search engine on Airliners .net with the serial thats usually a very good source
It just so happened that I had seen that machine in your time frame stated ( think I have seen/photographed far too much some times

) and thought it didnt quite look like what I saw...sorry mate
Keep it up
Paul
