Yes you have read the title correctly, the model section is happy to announce that we will be running a model building competition starting on the 01/01/2010. Now open to all FC members


Model Competition Rules.

Ladies and Gentlemen here are the rules of engagement for the forthcoming model competition for 2010.The competition will be split into various categories and prizes awarded for each category.

The categories are as follows, and follow the basic IPMS Guidelines.


1. 1/72 Scale Beginners
age 10 and above, Any aircraft built straight from the box to include kit decals.
Use of aftermarket products are not allowed.
The Aircraft can be sprayed or brush painted.
The aircraft should be on a simple base board that resembles either tarmac or grass.

THE PRIZE: 1/72 Hasegawa Japanese Sea Plane triple pack




1a. 1/72 intermediate-Advanced

Age 16 and over. Any aircraft built straight from the box to include kit decals.
Use of aftermarket products are not allowed.
The Aircraft can be sprayed or brush painted.
The aircraft should be on a simple base board that resembles either tarmac or grass.

THE PRIZE: 1/72 Hasegawa AV-8B Harrier II Double pack




2. 1/48th Scale Beginners

Beginners age 16 and over.
Any aircraft built straight from the box and using the kits decal sheet.
Again no after market products allowed.
Sprayed or brush painted and ideally on a
simple base board.

THE PRIZE: 1/48 Revell Rafale "Tiger Meet"




3. 1/48th Scale Advanced

Advanced modellers age 16 and over.
Any aircraft, with any decal sheet.
Use of resin,etched brass allowed or other plastic enhancement.
Lighting allowed and the use of power allowed to include engines and rotors or ramp doors.

THE PRIZE: 1/48 Hobby Boss Fleet Air Arm Avenger



4. 1/32nd and Larger - For the big boys toys!

Advanced modellers age 16 and over.
Any aircraft. Any decal sheet.
Use of resin,etched brass allowed or other plastic enhancement.
Lighting allowed and the use of power allowed to include engines and rotors or ramp doors.

THE PRIZE: 1/32 Czech Models F-80






The competition will run from the 1st of January 2010 and will end 1st of June 2010. This will give people a good chance to find a kit and complete it.

Each entry must be photographed to a high standard and show the progress from start to the finished article. It would be ideal to have at least Five images and at least two of these of your finished kit in the finished thread. If you are unsure of the format please look at either ARC or Hyperscale for ideas. If you wish to post a Work in Progress thread, please do this in the Modelling competition WIP section bellow.

As mentioned we would ask that if possible, all models are placed on a base board which should be sprayed or brush painted to simulate airfield tarmac. Black or Grey is the norm here. Alternatively, a green base, or artificial grass base is permitted.

However, please be aware. If the base is added to the model, keep the base plain. Any additional extras, such as figures, vehicles or scenery, will count as a diorama. Dioramas are not permitted in this competition. (Perhaps next time, if we get enough interest!).

I am thinking about entering the 1 48 beginners section.

I realy am a beginner, finger prints, painted canopy frames that would be a foot wide on the real thing, wonky decals the lot.
Is this realy a beginner section or a not quite or not quite super advance section. I dont want to be embarasing my self

That said I am still planning to treat my self to a 1 48 A10 for christmas.

Looking forward to seeing the entries.

Glad to hear you are entering,
all the beginners categories are as they say, we thought that way everyone can join in. So please feel free to enter at the level you feel most comfortable in and enjoy your build. shame I cant enter
I will arrange the WIP section so that people can post there entries on there nearer the start date.

I'll be entering my 1/48 Buccaneer

I'll have a go - either 1:48 or 1:32

I'll be haveing a crack at this.
i've tied to build 3 typhoons and a f117 in the last few years, but have neve completed one yet. I always seem to lose bits or break something so i bin the lot.
I'll enter the 1:48 beginners or 1:72 intermediate depending on what aicraft takes my fancy.
Right, i'm of to prepare a clean area and research models and building them.

The more there is the more likely we are to do another one

Quick question, what will be the criteria for judging the winners?

Will it be presentation, the quality of the build, the thought that has gone into choosing a colour scheme (for the advanced ones) etc

I think that for the advanced categories it will be attention to detail, quality of paintwork/decaling etc and overall presentation. For the beginners it wont be as strict eg how well it is put together, overall finish that sort of thing. I will of coarse confer with my fellow judge/s on what we are looking for.
The actual subject will have no bearing on the judging, you could do a spitfire or a euro fighter they will be all judged the same.

I would agree with Shaun on this and say that the kits are being judged on modelling skill. So a kit in the 1/48th Advanced would have to be of higher skill than a 1/72 beginner. Inside those categories it would be as Shaun has said, but probably with some consideration to overall impact (you know the kind of kits I mean, the ones you look at and are instantly impressed by).

But mainly the competition is for fun. Its not about who is the best modeller on FC, its all about getting people involved, hopefully attracting some new people to the hobby, but first and foremost, to enjoy yourself.

Spot on Ben, the plan is just to get people to enjoy the hobby. So build what you would like and possibly win a prize at the end.

Well I've decided - it's going to be one of the Foldy-Wingy-Thingies from my stash - Seafire FR47; Sea Fury FB11; Sea Hawk FGA6; Wyvern S4; Corsair Mk.II or Avenger Mk.III ... ... or possibly a Swordfish or other FAA type, but you can guarantee it'll have folded wings.

I'll be entering Monogram's MI-24D in the 1/48 advanced,

I'll have a go, I'll enter the 1/48 beginners comp. Not sure on what model to build yet .
