Re: 1/72 Intermediate-Advanced - Mig 29 UB - Updated 08/02/10

Afternoon all!!

Just a written update today... I have ended up with 6 stiches in my hand and cant do anything more for the minute
I have finally sorted out all all the gaps with filler and nearly sorted out the sanding
The next stage was to start getting the Missles ready as well as the Hardpoints... Bit harder than I thought
As it stands I am looking to get the painting started as soon as my stiches are removed!!

One question I do have is... Where would be or what would be the bast way to create a base? Can you buy them or is it easier to make one?

The other builds are coming along very nicely!! :thumb:

I should get some pictures sorted asap
Cheers

You can buy them, but they can be a bit expensive. A cheaper option is to use picture frames as you can paint the base what ever colour you like, similar to what Ive done with my rafale but you could put a runway/taxiway instead of the map I used.

Sorry I should have started my reply with 'hows your hand?' It sounds quite nasty. What did you do to it, not a building accident I hope?

Thanks Shaun!! :thumb:
Its sore but should be ok soon. I was at a Foam Party and I slipped and smashed a bottle with my hand. I missed the tendon by a few mm  Its a very deep cut but could have been worse!!
Thanks for asking though mate!! Hope you are well!!! :thumb:

Hi Jamie, hope your hand improves quickly - another very cheap alternative for a base is to visit your local DIY emporium and acquire an off-cut of MDF (most DIY stores cut MDF to size and almost always have off-cuts available cheap). All you need to do is tidy the edges to remove and rough left by the cutting, and then paint it in a suitable colour using acrylic paint. You can then simulate runway/taxiway/ramp markings by masking with tape and then painting with white paint suitable weathered. You can add more detail and/or texture with scenic products and plaster, but the plain MDF approach should suffice and shouldn't cost more than a few quid.

There are many ways to weather you build. It depends on how much you want to do and what sort of effect you want. The easiest is to get a wash but there are some really nice products on the market.

These may help as they can explain better than I can

OK ... ...
  • Paint your MDF board with a tarmac-coloured acrylic mix - I have a pot of blackboard paint to which I added some white until it became a medium-dark grey. You may get away with one coat, but two doesn't take too long - allow 24-hours to dry properly.
  • Lay out some strips of masking tape on your cutting mat. Using a pencil/ruler mark out the type of white/yellow lines on the tape and then cut out the pieces with a scalpel/straight edge. Place the tape strips onto the painted MDF board and smooth firmly down.
  • Using White/yellow paint, use a stippling motion with a relatively dry brush to fill in the gaps on the masking tape strips, allow to dry. Do a second coat if necessary.
  • When fully dry, remove the tape strips, you should be left with pristine runway/taxiway markings.
  • Imagine a well used taxiway, replicate the scuffs and tyremarks with drybrushing with dark grey paint on both the "tarmac" and the lines. Also simulate oil/fuel spills etc.
  • As an alternate, you could use plaster/scenic scatter etc. to simulate a rougher environment.
  • This should give you a fairly good rendition of a runway/taxiway.

A very quick base originally made for one of my son's 1:32 tanks (a RSDG Chally II) but since used for his Revell 1:32 Merlin HC.3

This is literally about 20 minutes work in total - painted MDF, a thin layer of Woodland Scenics landscape plaster coloured with powdered poster pain and scattered with Citadel scenic desert mix while still wet and then sea moss bushes bush fixed with PVA.

Thats very kind of you nick especially seeing you're lovely F-16:blush: Been a bit of lag lately as ive been witing for Ben to get home from Uni with the Alclad i ordered. However he now isn't sure if he is going to let me use his airbrush with it (worried about cleaning it afterwards) so a quick question i have heard that the Badger airbrush ceaner works well against Alclad, is this true or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

badger airbrush cleaner works fine you just have to be a bit more thorough than with enamels. I've used it a couple of times now(alclad) and my airbrush seems ok.

Ive not used the badger cleaner, but I do know that alclad's own stuff is very good. Its just a shame its so expensive. Is the badger stuff celulose based?
