Re: 1/48 Monogram F-101 Voodoo
Great work there Steve. The PE stuff is really making a difference.

Re: 1/48 Monogram F-101 Voodoo
Thanks TC!
Model starting to build up on steam now, ejector seats painted and in, pilots in too. I can see that the front pilot needs some work on the visor, but otherwise I am pleased

And a view from behind

Cheers for now,
Steve

Re: 1/48 Monogram F-101 Voodoo
Thanks again Patrick, and yes you are right, I am enjoying it. Quick update, she is sprayed in Vallejo white primer and sitting under cover for two weeks. It's that time again, back to sea - but this will give the primer time to cure! Then on my return I can crack on with the fun part - Painting!

Re: 1/48 Monogram F-101 Voodoo
With the Mig on the bench almost ready for gloss coat, I've started!
Well I'm home after a bumpy two weeks! Winter is here for sure - home to find that my primer has dried rock hard :-) just one small area that required filling and rescribe

So straight into preshading, XF1 Black

I also wanted to create a slight texture, so on the underside I've gone for some more preshading of XF77 dark grey

Topcoat next, then I want to try some post shading/ bleaching for my first time on this, as it is a large area of one colour!
Cheers

Re: 1/48 Monogram F-101 Voodoo
Thanks Patrick - to be honest it's only really the occasion like this where it is constant weather and rolling, but you get use to it!
Well the top coat is on, but I think it will need a few touch ups as the preshade seems to show a little too much, but here she is! XF-66

And then a small hiccup, fingerprint! Will leave this dry and sand out

Finally the fuel tanks are glossed ready for NMF!

Cheers

Re: 1/48 Monogram F-101 Voodoo
All,
Well decision day - the XF-66 looked way too dark compared to all my reference photos, so I re preshaded and sprayed vallejo Light grey, looks better. The preshading is a little more subtle too

Now the fuel tanks have turned out lovely - Buffable metal masters aluminium plate

Really pleased with the mornings work!

Ok with the Mig out of the way I've cracked on, first up the nose in semi gloss black

The anti glare will be done in Matt black next
Now Ive teased Patrick enough, so onto the exhaust cans, note that I have used a self expanding ear plug to plug the hole, one on the left in place, middle is out, and right is the plug. I also find these extremely useful for the intakes

And then a quick dry fit

My last coat was clear blue, which spat, grrrr! Never mind, will do my best

Re: 1/48 Monogram F-101 Voodoo
LOL Patrick, not quite, a few more steps needed, but I'm getting there!
Back in the modelling grove with the Voodoo now, got the anti glare Matt black on

Plus the dark grey on the leading edge of the elevators

Then onto the belly, dark grey around the front wheel bay and navigation bay, then red in the flap bay. First time removing the tape from round the forward gear, so really pleased. She's coming

My masking has come on loads - thanks to one man on Flory Models, Hans! A simple question I asked about how his lines are always so clean - Msk up, then put down a clear layer to prevent running. So I masked up and brushed on a layer of Klear, leave dry and then spray - what a difference to my lines! Thanks!
I've just got to work on the FLIR and somehow get that looking glass like. Then decals and Stencils
Cheers

Re: 1/48 Monogram F-101 Voodoo
Hi All!
Major milestone in the build now, decals are on! What a relief, they all went down ok (in the end), just giving them 24 hours to dry out before Klear coats

Also taken the masking off the cockpit area, even though I used a knife round the edges, they are still crap - an area to work and practice on!

Really pleased with these large decals, they didn't want to sit properly to start with, despite plenty of setting solution. I waited for them to dry and sliced them, then Tamiya thinners - they bubbled, and I though, What on earth have I done! This was my first time with thinners, went to bed and in the morning I got up, perfect! Even the panel lines are there

Tail was a hard area for me, managed to get the large yellow decal on, and the red/white/blue decals to match up ok

Then the airbrakes, put the large yellow decal on, leave to dry, and then sharp knife, cut out, place on old decal paper ready for the airbrake, shown upside down in the photo

All decals have had the panel lines sliced through them tonight, and Tamiya thinners applied to help bed them down more.
That's it for today, fun starts again tomorrow,
Cheers

Great work Steve, looking really good
I have never heard/ seen Tamiya acrylic thinners being used to set decals
, could you explain how this method works?

Re: 1/48 Monogram F-101 Voodoo - decals on!
No problem,
Set decals as normal. If they are ridged, wrinkled you slice with a sharp new blade, just enough to cut the decal, but not scratch the plastic, then brush on Tamiya thinners. It will bubble up over the next few minutes, but will settle back down after an hour or so. It will also work on the dreaded silvering.
Video is here, Phil starts talking about 7:40 minutes in. Well worth the watch.
