Humbrol Metal Cote

Hi guys,
I'm using the above (27001) for the first time on a Lightning.
I understand there's three different metal cotes, 27001, 02 and 03.
Firstly, has any one any experience on the above paints? I'm not getting the results I'm after, paint seems very 'Bitty' and upon putting on a second coat some of the first coat is rubbing off?
Any one have any tips? Do I need to use with thinners?
Is the acrylic paint better to use than the enamel? Or the spray version better than that?
Also is this the correct colour for a silver 92 sqd F2a lightning?
